Magyars used to have a goaltender (Király) who wore tatty grey sweats during big tournaments.  Southgate in his bespoke Savile Row suits should have more respect for the fashion subversives  :P

US tied El Salvador in a mess of a game down there. Looks like they had three inches of rain during the game. Qatar has three inches in a year. I believe they have two friendlies in the fall and then onto Qatar.

In the Nations League, England slumped to their biggest home defeat since 1928, losing 4 - 0 to Hungary... :(    Another game which shows the folly of the Nations League in a year when there's a major tournament (Southgate and Deschamps have used these 'glorified friendlies' to try out experimental sides / fringe players before the serious stuff, in Qatar). I always thought that the NL should exclude the major nations, to allow the tournament to be as UEFA intended - one where the lesser nations (who never qualify for the major tournaments) would have something to play for. This year has just brought the whole concept into disrepute. For England, the result looks bad but, under the circumstances, probably predictable.
Lesser nations like Italy? LOL.

I believe CONCACAF is having two games now and the rest next year. Not that what they usually do makes any sense. They should have been ashamed of the conditions last night. I would have just refused to play if I controlled the US team.

Italy (along with England, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Portugal) would be excluded from my Nations League...I think I read that Southgate used 37 different players, in four games, with at least six formation permutations, which sometimes changed during a half, never mind between halves.Think it's possible that he just might have been using these games to experiment?... :hysterical:

Problem would be that a refusal to play would mean forfeiting the game - although with seven changes in the line-up, and the conditions, I'm not sure what Berhalter got out of the game....

I think the Nations League will end up being as successful, and enduring, as the League Of Nations... :D  ;)

World Cup cities announced. DC/Baltimore bid failed.

Quote
The final regional groups for 2026. (This matters because, to reduce travel, FIFA plans to group countries by region.)

EAST: Toronto (BMO Field); Boston (Gillette Stadium, Foxborough); Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial Field); Miami (Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens); and New York/New Jersey  (MetLife Stadium.)

CENTRAL: Kansas City (Arrowhead Stadum); Dallas (AT&T Stadium); Atlanta (Mercedes Benz Stadium); Houston (NRG Stadium); Monterrey, Mexico (Estadio BBVA); Mexico City (Estadio Azteca).

WEST: Vancouver (BC Place); Seattle (Lumen Field); San Francisco (Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara); Los Angeles (SoFi Stadium, Inglewood); and Guadalajara, Mexico (Akron Stadium).

Pretty bad when the nations capital can’t even get a preliminary round game

If England could end up playing at Arrowhead - that would be something!  ;)

FedUp field is totally unsuitable and Baltimore is Baltimore.

Oh the stadium is fine, perhaps ideal. Some big Euro clubs played there in the before times.  I'll go in a heartbeat if I am not already in Gitmo

"You can't imagine a World Cup coming to the US. and the capital city not taking a major role as well.", said Chief Competitions and Events Officer, Colin Smith.

Got it!!!  DC to be the host centre for all England supporters... :hysterical:

There were some '92 WC games at RFK - also '96 Atlanta Olympics had some group stage games here.  I went to Nigeria/Mexico and was like one of 5 gringos in the place (sellout crowd too), it was great

I went to US-Portugal in 1996.  I think Keller was the goalkeeper.

Begs the question - is there a consensus on who was / is the best US goalkeeper over the past 30 years?  Meola, Friedel, Keller, Howard, more current guys?

I went to that one (US/Portugal) as well - it was a day game IIRC, and lots of families.  Best US goalkeeper - hard call but on balance I'd have to go with Howard.  Though Friedel was nails in that 2002 WC game (again vs Portugal).

Check out Ovechkin's goal this afternoon. (Yes, I’m in the correct thread.)

Can’t think this will last very long.

If he didn’t continue to play here because his wife didn’t like living outside the UK, how can being the coach here end any differently?
