No, Strasburg's contract is probably the worst in sports history. Its going to cost the Nationals 7 years of any kind if competitive window, and likely require the team to trade Soto.

Pitchers are fragile these days; hence, it's hard, imo, to justify mega-contracts for any of them. As for 2019, the Nats approach and world championship justifies going all out, the future be damned. If you're about saving arms, you're deluding yourself. Stras and Corbin might well have been what we see now, regardless of 2019 workload.

I still get steamed when I think back to when they held back Strasburg from the playoffs back in the day. They could’ve won the World Series that year.

I think Strasburg’s career is over. I would recommend he move to a relief role, but that would never work. Stras needs his routine. Days of rest/preparation.

As amazing as 2019 was, in a way, it also led to the Nats demise.

After 2019, I was all for signing Rendon and letting Stras go elsewhere. I'm totally biased toward position players. The right decision, in hindsight, would been to sign neither. Can you imagine the outrage though if that had happened?

You make a great point.  What would have happened if we lost to Milwaukee in the 2019 WC game, and Strasburg never became the World Series MVP?  Would we have given him 7 years, $245M.  I don't think so.  Bottom line for me is that I wouldn't trade the 2019 results, even if we would be better positioned today.

You are correct. If they wanted to stay competitive they could have signed 2/3 very good players for the money saved. Of course that would still leave the question of extending Trea and how to replace Max.

our payroll is $129 million this year and won't get anywhere close to the cap any time soon, Strasburg's contract isn't impacting this team right now.
