Am I the only one expecting nothing? Like, if he's hitting 92-93, I consider this an amazing return.

I think he’ll be excellent.  He’ll be as good as ever for 5 starts then will get injured

Eric Longehagen from FG:

Quote
Also set to return to a big league rotation is Nationals righty Stephen Strasburg, who has made three rehab starts with Triple-A Rochester, also on four days rest, recovering from thoracic outlet surgery. While he’s still showing plus secondary stuff, especially his changeup, his velocity has been way down, hovering in the 88–92 range with poor shape. Of all the pitchers who I’ll cover today, he’s the only one who hasn’t looked anything like himself.

I haven't seen the <90s much on the fastball, so it'll be interesting to see what real readings look like tonight.  It's his secondary stuff that let's me think he'll be a top of the rotation guy even without the velocity.  But, time for letting reality be the reality check.  Just having take a turn every 5th day is more than what others have done with his surgery.

You cant be a top of the rotation guy without a good fastball.

I'm talking more like a #2.  For the Nats, he'd function as the #1, but without really being that level. As for good fastball, I think the comment about the shape of the fastball might be more important than being in the low 90s.

I'll be watching with guarded optimism. If he starts grooving 89 mph fastballs, he's gonna get lit up, and then everyone will be on here talking about how he's washed up.

Like Greinke the past few years? Greg Maddux? There have been others also. Need a curveball to be good and also some separation MPH between the change up and fastball. A good number 3/4 starter the next couple years would be a major hep.

Strasburg seems like the kind of guy to retire if he’s washed.

That would get us out of his contract, no?

Livo's fastball was what, 80 mph?  From a radar gun on a maserati going in the other direction?

I don't see him quitting from a competitiveness standpoint.

:lmao: yea, he'll just walk away from 200 million dollars. The union will love that

If you retire for health reasons, you still get the money. That's why Chris Davis is still being paid.

The last guy I can think of who retired for non-health reasons and the team didn't have to pay him was Adam LaRoche who walked away from tens of millions of guaranteed dollars in 2016 when the White Sox stopped allowing his teenage son into the clubhouse.

And be out for the rest of the season. When Stras gets hurt, it's almost never for a short stretch.

It was like when everyone can see that the car is going to reverse into the wall, but no-one shouts 'STOP!!!'

That outing will have done wonders for Strasburg's confidence - ah well, onward and downward... ;)

No one in their right mind leaves that much money on the table. I think it more likely that he seeks a second opinion and goes back to the DL

Addressed this in the other thread, but this is such a weird take. He's a world series MVP and doesn't need confidence builders. He needs to get a feel and properly used this as a tune up.

Stephen Strasburg was very encouraged how he felt physically tonight. Felt his mistakes were of execution and in some cases pitch selection. But overall was happy, even smiled talking to us.

What is the track record for a 33 year old making a successful return after sitting out two years with injuries?

Stras was awful in his first rehab start at Low-A, then put together a string of superb starts before getting called up. Let's give at least 2-3 more starts before writing him off.

not great, and thoracic outlet surgery has less of a track record than even 2nd TJS. It's all about the conditioning at this point.  It's less about wins in his first few starts than continuing to build stamina, getting a feel for his pitches, and getting to whatever his peak now is physically.

After basically not pitching for two years I am sure he has doubts. Don’t see why they would want to go beyond 60-65 pitches in his first MLB start. Even against the Marlins that is more stres than a minor league start.

In any event let’s see how he does this month and if he can stay healthy. He will likely never near the value of his contract but would be good to have a decent starter.

Three strong innings, and then he ran out of gas. Strasburg will get better and stronger.
