How are the roads out there? Can I ethically ask my mother-in-law to drive from Centreville to Arlington at 4 PM today to pick us up at the airport?

The Weather Channel folks are saying it was a huge burst of snow at the end of the storm that hit the Fredericksburg area, a bunch of tractor trailers collided and created chaos. Fredericksburg ended up getting around 14" of snow, nobody predicted anything like that before the storm him.

GFS and Euro are forecasting another east coast storm on Thursday, dropping around 1-5" more of snow in the DC area and almost a foot in the WV mountains, so ski season is on.

from the metro bridge over the potomac, 395 and the GW parkway were moving well and pretty clean by 10:30 or so.  Crystal City, which is next to the airport, got an honest 8 inches. It's not the highway, but it's sloppy.  I think it is  bit better west, and I haven't heard whether 66 is bad.

If she's a NoVA person, then this would be sit it out weather.  If she's Chicago / Great Lakes, then she'd be OK, I guess.  But don't take mother-in-law advice from me :)

more towards the evening, right?  I'm supposed to have a hospital outpatient procedure that day, and friends are picking me up after it in the late afternoon and I'll be staying with them one night.  I want to keep them as friends.  It's been, what, 45 years since we met.

No dude, like people driving little cars. They were stuck in 95 for over 12 hours. All because VDOT decided they couldnt pre-treat the roads, and then decided not to do anything afterwards to treat them.

But hey, its not like I95 is an important roadway or anything . . .

Gonna be honest, even if she knows how to drive in the snow, the majority of people dont. Its hilarious to watch people driving 10 under the speed limit with their hazards on, but didnt take two minutes to clear any of the snow off their windows or roof.

I do have to admit that 30+ years ago I occasionally got a kick out of driving with a foot of snow on the top of my car back in my New England days.   Seeing how long I could keep it from falling off.  I forget what the word is for that.  Jackass? D!c1<?

The accidents were all involving large trucks. I am glad you have analyzed the causes of the accidents already. I will stay tuned for a full report.  :hysterical:

A lot of people were stuck for like 24 hours. I'm sorry that is truly unacceptable, I'm really incredulous no one stepped up with plan to rescue those poor people.

I can unequivocally state that there was at least one accident that involved non-large trucks. He sent pictures from the scene

The bottom line is that VDOT completely and utterly failed to prep the roads, nor remediate them properly yesterday

Sure VDOT is mostly to blame but you want to blame people in small cars based on one accident. If truckers jackknife it means they didn’t leave enough room to stop in bad conditions. Same with any cars. I mean if the conditions are that bad get off the road.

Maybe frostbite? If they ran out of gas they'd be sitting in the cold all night. I also cannot even fathom what they were doing for potty breaks.

Should be prepared when driving in the winter.

Yes. Go 24 hours with no food or water. Not to mention medication.

Should be prepared when driving in the winter.

Ah yes, victim blaming.

But I look like a crackpot when I have get home bag

If I came home from the bus from DC in a storm I would make sure to have a snack at least.  These folks were trying to drive through a major storm. Just dumb.

The Governor made me drive faster than I should have been in those conditions. LOL.
