Guy Lafleur. What a great player he was.

One of the greatest before numbers started to explode.  Just so smoothe and effective.  Even at the height of Bruins-Canadiens rivalry in the '70s, you never heard a Bruins fan take a swipe at his play. 

IIRC, he was the last player the Canadiens grabbed in the Gallic draft.  They used to be able to take the top french-surnamed player out of Quebec.

of course it had an effect (I/M/O - but I'm not an expert). I think Larry Robinson was the first great non-Gallic surnamed player for them.  I think Dryden was post the Gallic draft.  Richard x2, Bellevue, Lafleur, Tremblay . . .

I suppose the counter was that, up through the 60s, the Leafs did pretty well.

Came upon this. Lafleur was drafted after Montreal acquired the pick from the California Golden Seals. Major seal. I mean steal. He was picked over Marcel Dionne. People also forget he had a slow start to his career.

So, apparently the story is the Canadiens had the right to 2 best french Canadians for about 6 years in the 60s. Marc Tardiff might be the best player they took that way. When Gilbert Perrault would have been selected, the nhl ended it. The abilty to pick 2 French Canadians was compensation for their predraft abilty to get more or less everyone from Quebec
