Agree that I don't think Schilling gets the dead cat bounce to put him over the top, and no one else was close. Personally I would vote for Rolen, Wagner, and I'm on the fence about Buehrle. Realistically speaking though, they are all probably best suited for the hall of very good instead of the hall of fame.

Several sure fire HOF guys there. Except they are being punished for taking steroids when MLB did not care and no one in the MLB hierarchy has been punished.

Shirley Povich spotted PEDs in his last column. He called them modern "nutrition shakes", and he used the '"'. Povich said everything but the word "cheater" in talking about Mark McGwire.

Quote
McGwire, weighs 245 pounds, stands 6 foot 5, and bulked up by strength coaches and Nautilus weightlifts, plus the new diet of "nutrition shakes" popular in the clubhouses may well hit the ball farther than the 215-pound Ruth, although there are stubborn non-believers. As Walter Johnson once said when asked to compare the Babe's swats with those hammer blows of Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx and Hank Greenberg: "Lemme say this, those balls Ruth hit got smaller quicker than anybody else's."

I'd vote for Kent, Wagner, and Rolen as well.  I'm still torn about the steroid guys.

this is the best time of the year because baseball writers decide their HOF vote is the most important and sacred thing in the world and not just a vote for which guy gets an ugly statue made to sit in upstate NY.

The line about the informal bar on dopers entering the HGH Hall reminds me of the old pro cycling Amgen Tour of California.  Amgen developed EPO.

Career wRC+/WAR

Minnie Minoso:  +133/50.8
Tony Oliva +129/40.7
Gil Hodges +121/42.1
Dick Allen  +155/61.3

Guess which three guys made the Hall and who did not--what a freaking joke.

On Minnie Minoso: “Minnie Minoso played the game the way it’s supposed to be played. He did not have the power of a (Mickey) Mantle or the overall talent of a (Willie) Mays, but he sprayed hits to all fields, never swung at a bad pitch, crowded the plate, bunted, stole bases, broke up double plays, made diving catches, and always, but always, hit the cut-off man. He loved to play baseball, was in every minute of every game he ever played and never let up, no matter how one-sided the score. He was what baseball is all about.”

He was all of that, and more, if that's possible.  I remember him well from my youth...

Me, too. I always asked myself how Joe Cambria got so many Cuban ballplayers for the Nats but missed Minnie Minoso. He was always doing something to beat Washington.

Dick Allen was my favorite Sox player during the brief time he was in Chicago...

...and second favorite all time to Nellie Fox, who struck out a grand total of 216 times in 10,351 Plate Appearances over 19 years, and never more than 18 times in an entire 154 game season, and retired with a .288 lifetime Batting Average.  Think about that...

Dick Allen deserves to be in the HoF...

Ortiz gets in, and the door slams shut for the steroid-era guys (Clemens and Bonds, and probably A-Rod).

Wagner, Rolen, and Helton all deserve induction IMHO.

And it's over for Curt Schilling who on baseball career stats alone should have gotten in.

Quote
2022 Baseball Hall of Fame results
David Ortiz: 77.9 percent
Barry Bonds: 66 percent*
Roger Clemens: 65.2 percent*
Scott Rolen: 63.2 percent
Curt Schilling: 58.6 percent*
Todd Helton: 52 percent
Billy Wagner: 51 percent
Andruw Jones: 41.1 percent
Gary Sheffield: 40.6 percent
Alex Rodriguez: 34.3 percent
Jeff Kent: 32.7 percent
Manny Ramirez: 28.9 percent
Omar Vizquel: 23.9 percent
Sammy Sosa: 18.5 percent*
Andy Pettitte: 10.7 percent
Jimmy Rollins: 9.4 percent
Bobby Abreu: 8.6 percent
Mark Buehrle: 5.8 percent
Torii Hunter: 5.3 percent
* = 10th and final year on the ballot
All other players received less than 5 percent of the vote.

Next year the big add to the ballot is Carlos Beltran, and of course, Jayson Werth.

BBWA letting in a guy who was strongly suspected of testing positive while keeping out other players strongly suspected of having used steroids. The hall is an absolute joke now

Marks of sportswriter subjectivity and preferences seem to emerge continually in MLB and the NFL. Art Monk, Gary Clark, and Joe Jacoby come to mind. And then there’s the NBA, where I think most posters in the basketball thread on here may eventually get into Springfield as contributors.

BBWA is so much worse. The best hitter of all time just dropped off the ballot. Another guy who used PEDs was just the sole player admitted. The only difference is that one was friendly to the writers

It's all moral hypocrisy at this point.  Just look at their stats and judge on those.  Let Pete in too.  As far as we know he never bet as a player.  He is not getting in as a manger.

WRT to Ortiz, he tested positive in 2003 in a test that MLB has said wasn't accurate and produced at least 10 false positives. He never again failed a test. I think he gets a pass. There's no comparison with Clemens, A-Rod, or Bonds.
