Ryan Zimmerman 2022: Does He Stay or Does He Go?
« Topic Start: November 17, 2021, 11:45:38 AM »
Zimmerman on the Sports Junkies this morning:

Quote
I think we'll learn a lot more here over the next few weeks about the CBA," he said. "I haven't even been keeping up, but it seems like those negotiations are starting to get going pretty good. I think the deadline or whatever, when it runs out I guess is December 1, but that doesn't really mean anything. So we'll see some more."

"But yeah, I mean, I'm enjoying some time off. I'm enjoying that," he continued. "I still definitely am planning on playing, but we'll see what happens. No decisions either way yet, but yeah, I'm definitely enjoying kind of just relaxing a little bit right now."

It sounds like he's coming back assuming no long-term work stoppage.

He's trying to milk the retirement fund...

Not exactly the same but we had a luncheon for one of our senior execs who transferred to another audit site. Six months later he was back. I asked him if we could get the money back we paid for the luncheon. I want my tears back from that last game.

Universal DH and he has a purpose.  I could see splitting time there with Yadi, backing up Bell, and getting a ton of PAs.

Would we really want him as the universal DH?

Love him. Should be in the organization for however long he wants. But he seems to only be a good MLB hitter against lefites. Even with a universal DH, he's still a platoon bat.

Would he be the DH or would a DH just let he and Bell play?  Zim is better defensively.  I wonder if they'll go with a DH only for the starting pitcher, which is a better rule, IMO, and if so a cheap ZIM getting 2-3 ABs is probably a pretty solid plan.

I guess that depends on what else the team gets in the offseason.

I kind of assumed that Hernandez was going to be the DH

Yadiel has reverse splits oddly enough:

vs LHP: .291 / .344 / .500
vs RHP: .255 / .308 / .377

what I meant by universal DH is extending the DH to the NL, which I take it is likely.  Not a full time DH.  Some of that time should go to Yadi against righties.  At $1 million, RZ can play against most LHP either at DH or 1st.

Historically, Zimm hits RHP and LHP better than Yadiel.
Career:
RHP:.267   .326   .456
LHP: .310   .386   .530

Though last year Zimm hit only .207 against RHP.  Bell is a better platoon partner than Yadiel for Zimmerman.

I wonder if Zimmerman was skewed a bit by facing LH starting pitchers and RH late inning relievers who are going to be tougher.    I don't remember Zimmerman struggling against righty starters when Bell was out and he was playing full time.   I don't know how to look up those kind of situational splits though.

I don't get the love-fest for Yadiel on here.  He's a decent hitter but a terrible fielder at an easy position.

He's not a good enough hitter to be worth a roster spot as the short side of a DH platoon.  He'd get what, 100 at bats in that capacity?

Because he's shown flashes of being a decent hitter when given steady ABs. Give them to him next season and flip him at the deadline if he's posting a wRC+ of 110 or more

Fine with me, but that's not going to happen if he's a platoon DH.  If the team's going to suck, he should be playing every day in LF.

Then make him the every day DH

Z-Man has been a fave of mine since day one. Yes it will be sad when he does retire, but now it won't hurt me upon hearing the news as it would have a few years back. I just hope it will be his decision and not the result of an injury.

Zero reason to not want Zimmerman back now that the team is not contending. Veteran clubhouse presence, fan favorite, pad the counting stats, lots of reasons to want him around.

A reasonable take. Especially if the DH is in place.

Am I the only baseball fan who can't stomach the "Washington" Sports Junkies?  Evidently, they're now interviewing Zim each Wednesday morning (I guess as a replacement for the old Wednesday Rizzo weekly interview).  WTF???  No discussion of baseball at all.  No discussion of the Nats at all (since he's now a FA  -- even though he supposedly is proud of being a Nat for life thus far).  The frickin' Junkies didn't even ask him about anything baseball related, except at the very end of the interview, when they asked him about his activity since season's end.  Just playing golf is what he's been doing and spending time with the family.  Are you kidding me?  Who cares about Zim's boring personal life?

What baseball things are they going to ask him? Zim wont comment on anything, especially during the lockout.
