Meanwhile in Mets-land...
« Topic Start: November 01, 2021, 05:39:32 PM »
Maybe you have to be in NYC to notice, but the Mets are a mess. Doesn't matter how much money Steve Cohen, the new owner, has brought from his hedge fund.

- Cohen is attached to team president Sandy Alderson, who organized Cohen's purchase of the Mets

- No one wants to be President of Baseball Operations, reporting to Alderson. Cohen offered the job to Billy Beane, who would rather be in the Bay Area. He offered the job to Theo Epstein, who asked for a percentage of the team. Cohen threw a fit at the arrogance, the insulting arrogance, of Epstein's asking for a small piece of ownership in return for Epstein's skill. There seem to have been other people who turned down the chance to work for Alderson and Cohen, but few names have floated to the top of the Gowanus Canal that is the Mets organization.

Reference to Gowanus Canal:
Quote
Even though most industrial tenants stopped using the Gowanus Canal in the middle of the 20th century, the pollution was never remedied. By the 1990s, it was recognized as one of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gowanus_Canal

- In frustration, Cohen has asked his hedge fund and his friend, Chris Christie, to find a President of Baseball. Yes, that Chris Christie.

- When the playoffs end, the Mets must decide what to do with Noah Syndegaard, Marcus Stroman, Michael Conforto, Javy Baez: all free agents. Jeff McNeill, Brandon Nimmo, Dominic Smith, and Pete Alonso are arb eligible. What should the Mets offer? Do they make a QO for Syndegaard and Conforto?

- What should the Mets do with their temporary GM, Zach Scott, who faces trial on DUI?

- Then, who manages the Mets for Scott or a GM to be named by a President of Baseball to be named later?

Finishing 4th in the NL East means that one is bad at being bad.  5th or (??) bust.

Maybe they could coax Anderson Hernandez out of retirement.

Mets interim GM is out.

Quote
Zack Scott is the latest Mets executive to leave the team under a dark cloud. Scott was let go by the Mets on Monday, two months after he was placed on administrative leave, according to a baseball executive who had been briefed on the matter but could not speak publicly about it.

<snip>

After many years in the Boston Red Sox organization, Scott was hired by the Mets in December to be an assistant general manager. He was promoted to general manager on an interim basis after Jared Porter was fired from his post in January following allegations that he had sexually harassed a female reporter.

Quote
The team has so far failed to land any of the well-known targets for the president’s job, like Theo Epstein and Billy Beane, so it is said to now be looking for a younger, less experienced person to take over the operation.

Improving management at the Mets seemed like it should be easy for the new owner to do but apparently not?

He wants to be hands-on, like dan snyder. Depends on Sandy Alderson, Chris Christie, and his hedge-fund pals. Mets are like the Gowanus Canal. Too polluted to be cleaned up,

The shortstop Lindor, frustrated by the second baseman’s latest positioning gaffe and their ensuing argument, according to a club source, grabbed McNeil by the throat and pinned him against a wall in the tunnel. Before the situation could escalate, Mets players hearing the commotion arrived to break it up.

After the Mets beat Arizona 5-4 in a walk-off, neither Lindor nor McNeil would acknowledge the altercation other than to say an animal had been spotted in the tunnel and the two players were arguing over whether it was a rat or raccoon, prompting Mets players to the scene.

It’s an explanation team officials refused to confirm, realizing the absurdity of the story from the public’s view.

Alderson has taken his gamble on Conforto and Syndegaard, offering both qualifying offers.

No such thing as a bad one year deal.

Im a little surprised Conforto didnt take the QO. He was bad last season and I dont think he'll find much in the market.

Here is a running list of the current job openings:

Manager: Mets, A's
GM/president of baseball operations: Mets (general manager)

Nov. 10: Cromie 'frontrunner' for Mets' GM (report)

Former Nationals assistant GM Adam Cromie is "the frontrunner" to become the next general manager of the Mets, a source told MLB.com's Jon Morosi. Cromie left baseball to pursue a legal career in 2017.

Mets president Sandy Alderson said Tuesday that the club has talked to a handful of candidates, but it has not set a deadline for when it expects to hire a general manager to replace Zack Scott, who was relieved of his duties on Nov. 1. MLB Network insider Joel Sherman reports that Alderson also said no formal offer has been made to any candidate, and that multiple candidates remain under consideration.

Nov. 6: Baltimore AGM off Mets' list (report)

SNY's Andy Martino reports that Sig Mejdal, currently assistant general manager and vice president with the Orioles, is "no longer in the mix" for the Mets' opening for president of baseball operations. No specific reason was initially given.

Nov. 4: Ferreira to decline Mets interview (report)

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reports that Raquel Ferreira, currently executive vice president and assistant general manager with the Red Sox, has decided to decline an interview for the Mets' president of baseball operations vacancy.

Ferreira has been in the Red Sox organization since 1999. She was the fourth woman in MLB history to be elevated to a team assistant general manager position, and Kim Ng moved up from the same position with the Yankees and Dodgers to become the Marlins' general manager in 2020.

The Mets' search for a president of baseball operations has come up empty so far, with several candidates withdrawing their names from consideration or declining to interview. The Mets were also denied permission from some candidates' current teams to interview them.

t’s Day 2 of the GM Meetings in Carlsbad, Calif., and the Mets have not made a decision on who their next general manager will be.

According to team president Sandy Alderson, the club has talked to a handful of candidates, but it has not set a deadline for when it expects to hire a GM to replace Zack Scott, who was relieved of his duties on Nov. 1. Scott had been on administrative leave since shortly after his Aug. 31 arrest in White Plains, N.Y. His DUI trial is set for Dec. 8.

Alderson doesn’t plan to interview any new candidates while he is in California, but he will follow up with candidates he has already spoken to; Alderson declined to name who those candidates were. According to published reports, the Mets have interest in former Angels GM Billy Eppler. Others, including Theo Epstein, Billy Beane and David Stearns, have already removed themselves from consideration or been declined permission to interview by their current clubs.

A source told MLB.com on Tuesday that one candidate in the mix is former Nationals assistant GM Adam Cromie, first reported as an option by The Washington Post's Chelsea Janes. The Mets have not confirmed those reports.

“We'll see what happens before the end of the week,” Alderson told reporters on Tuesday. “I will say this about the search: … We've talked to a lot of people. Probably half the people are going to be here today. In some cases, you know, we haven't gotten permission [to talk to some candidates].

“I think people are comfortable where they are, whether it be a family situation or something. And in other cases, I think, admittedly, there's a reluctance to come to New York, but I think it's mostly about New York, not about [owner] Steve [Cohen] or the organization’s overhead. It's a big stage, and some people would just prefer to be elsewhere.”

Once the Mets find their new GM, they will need to hire a manager to replace Luis Rojas and build out a coaching staff for next season. The only coach confirmed to be returning to the big league team is pitching coach Jeremy Hefner.

So it's about New York and not about Alderson's big buddy, "Steve"?

Mets owner Steve Cohen has been cited in a suit by minor league baseball player against MLB for back pay.

Cohen – responding to Mets fans angst over not signing 10th overall pick Kumar Rocker – tweeted on Aug. 1, “Education time – Baseball draft picks are worth up to 5x their slot value to clubs. I never shy away from investments that can make me that type of return.”

Obviously, the tweet was widespread with Cohen boasting over 225,000 followers on the platform. It caught the eye of Dr. Erica Groshen, a senior economic advisor from the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and former Commissioner of the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics. Groshen was hired by players to write an expert report on why MLB has been allegedly paying sub-minimum wage salaries.

“One recent indication of the value of a minor league player comes from Steven Cohen, owner of the New York Mets. He asserts that baseball draft picks are worth up to five times their slot vale to Clubs,” Groshen wrote.

In most jobs you legally can’t agree to be paid less than minimum wage.

Poor Metsies! Syndergaard signed with the Angels. If Stroman signs someplace else, life gets harder, and the chaos continues.

Chelsea J. reports on Mets signing of Billy Eppler, their fifteenth choice as GM

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/11/19/mets-general-manager-billy-eppler/

Quote
At various points since the World Series ended, any number of men and women seemed like candidates to appear on a Zoom call like this — the one on which the New York Mets introduced their next general manager. For weeks, names emerged and disappeared, were asked and declined, were floated and revoked for one reason or another.

Each would-be candidate came and went, serving as a not-so-subtle indictment against the eventual choice: The person the Mets finally introduced as their general manager would be, unavoidably and undeniably, something of a second (or, perhaps, tenth or so) choice.

But Friday it was Billy Eppler, the former Angels GM, who was introduced as the next general manager of the Mets on a Zoom call with owner Steve Cohen and President Sandy Alderson sitting side by side in from of a Mets background in another frame. Eppler is entering a world that has been built by Alderson and remodeled by the mercurial Cohen and his millions, a world that has seen many promising introductions like this one, only to watch the old Mets demons seize control in the end.
