Can't boo Duvall, either. Wanted the Nats to sign him. Admittedly, instead of Schwarbs, but I wanted a righty to pair with Soto.

Right off the bat, bottom of the first, Fox commits two offenses against baseball. Huge ones.

(1) Joe Buck says, "Charlie Morton was a big reason the Astros won the 2017 World Series." So nothing to do with cheating? As if MLB did not conclude...eh, cheating??

(2) Smoltz gives his opinion on an over-under about the number of strikeouts Morton will have, and welcomes viewers to bet on some Fox betting thing. Buck pumps up the prediction: "You heard it here from the Hall of Famer".

Morton retires three batters, two by strikeout AFTER breaking his leg. That’s impressive.

The first one figures to be par for the course, tiptoeing around the pachyderm in the dome.

The second one is unbelievably bad. It’s one thing for the antitrust-protected MLB to directly enlarge its enmeshment with gambling operations. To have the World Series Game 1 announcers talk the over-under and then immediately segue into encouraging those watching to gamble — actually diverting focus on the in-game competition to that — seems particularly beyond the pale. And if that was actually followed by “you heard it from the Hall of Famer”, how much cheaper can they make things look?

Fox massively overpaid for broadcast rights to an increasingly unpopular event. They have to get their money back somehow

TBH, that's fair.  The drummer stuff didn't help the pitchers prevent runs, and he pitched well for that team during the season and the playoffs.  Didn't Morton pull an amazing long relief appearance in the deciding game?  That's Corbin-level performance. It's fair to say that on the pitching side, which is half of baseball, he did a lot to help them win.  That can be true even though the offense cheated, which Fox has mentioned as well throughout their run.

The irony of Morton is the Astros didn't lock him up (they paid Verlander instead) and he went on to the Rays, where he pitched them to a World Series.  The Rays, being cheap, didn't pick up his option, so then he went to the Barves where he was their best pitcher and took them to the World Series. Morton deserves a ton of praise for his performance late in his career.  I hope the cracked fibula heals well enough that it doesn't end his career.  A terrific late-bloomer.

Fox is not trying to attract us old farts. They are trying to attract younger viewers.  Not much different than other sports nowadays.

Not surprising they don’t mention the Astros cheating.  The announcers don’t mention the Pats cheating scandals every broadcast.  :hysterical:

The Phillies were the first team to take a flyer on Morton in 2016. Then he blew out his hamstring early in the year. He had been a backend starter up till then so they declined his option in 2017 which allowed him to go to the Astros that year.  Such are the things that make history.

We'll see if Atlanta can pull this off after losing their top starter. It's interesting to see the success they're having given their pitching staff, in contrast to the Nats/Dodgers philosophy that you need 3 ace-level starters.

Remaining starter regular season ERAs:
Fried 3.04
Anderson 3.58
Smyly 4.48
Ynoa 4.05

I don't bet on games, but you have to be kidding yourself if you don't realize that a good chunk of the NFL's success relative to MLB over the last 50 years is tied to football betting being common.  Lines on football games are meaningful and were in papers in the 70s and 80s.  Everyone bets the Super Bowl.  This was also key to March Madness becoming bigger than the NBA finals (doing your bracket).  While baseball has a number of bettable props and events, always has, there's nothing that compares well to a point spread.  MLB is trying to find a way to keep people watching and involved.

Still comparable to the Astros I think. Losing Morton is tough due to his big game experience. Fried against Urquidy seems to be in their favor. If they win tonight probably won’t matter that Morton is gone.
