Gee, Bell caught that pop like an outfielder.  Maybe he can play occasionally out there?

For those of you who think trading mid-tier prospects isn't ever a problem, I remind you that the Nats traded Max Schrock for a rental of Marc "Scrabble" the LOOGY.   Max Schrock just hit a 2-run homer against the Nationals after tripling last night, all while Scrabble files his retired toenails somewhere in a bar in Arizona.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a 2B/3B/LF utility guy on a min salary hitting .316/.363/.505 about now?
Tampa find those kind of guys all the time.  And not just from their system.  Pitchers too.

Espino is a nice find, but a pitch to contact guy can get in trouble in Cincinnati

stinks now  and it bites you later, but they neded Scrabble at the time. Cistulli was onto Schrock, but he wasn't even a Nats top 10 back then. I can live with that turning into a player. It probably helps Rizzo in the next deal because it shows he doesn't offer chicken poop when he says he is offering chicken salad

He wasn't a Nats top 10 because the people who do those lists largely don't seem to watch actual baseball games.  They just stick the high draft picks and expensive international signings into the rankings and then move out the ones who flop, replacing them with the next year's high draft picks and expensive signings.

This is not to say Schrock is heaven's gift to baseball, but at the time of the trade he was 21, OPSing well over .800 in high-A, was hitting everything hard to all fields, and could clearly stick at a middle IF position.  Regardless of draft position and rodential stature, most teams don't - and the Nationals then didn't - have 10 prospects who have more potential than that.   For example, he was ranked in the prospect services behind Andrew Stevenson - who is older and had worse stats at the same levels as Schrock, plus a similar rodential stature, an ugly swing, and fringe positional issues.

Why?  Well, Stevenson was a 2nd round pick and hadn't done enough to justify becoming a non-prospect yet.  Lo and behold, he got there.  Funny how being a high draft pick doesn't help in the long run when your swing looks like my niece raking leaves.

Not going to argue somebody wasn't clueless about the kid's actual talent. Just more saying it takes something to get something.  And the Nats weren't the only team to give up on Schrock. The As or the Mariners let him go too. This isn't Larry Andersen for Jeff Bagwell

Stevenson would've robbed that.

A's and Cubs put Schrock on waivers. This is his second big league season, and he has about 95 AB's.

The A's traded him to the Cardinals, who then cut him eventually (and why not?  It's not like they need him), at which point the Reds picked him up.  Somehow he's still only 26.

Of course it's not Andersen for Bagwell, but it's an example of a trade that was potentially reasonable at the time (and Scrabble was good with the Nats, albeit for a team that did a pre-2019 Nats playoff experience) but amounted to not much benefit in the short run with the bill now coming due.  Given the number of such trades the Nats made, it was natural that at least one lottery ticket would amount to something not completely useless.   I was merely pointing out that hey, this guy might be one we'd want back in retrospect.

The A's traded him (in the Stephen Piscotty deal) and he was never with the Cubs.

Maybe not. Robles was replaced after one AB tonight. Is he hurt?

I feel like raging about something inconsequential on the internet.  Can someone give me something even more petty than Max Schrock to pop off about?

What about the original Screech not taking his hat off during the Anthem?

Oh, and your basic point is right. Hollowing out your minors eventually leaves you saying,"why can't we get guys like that?" when your feed finishes. Flags fly forever, so Riz gets a pass, but the bill came due

Ah, everything about the original Screech makes me incandescent with fury.  Good one.

I'll also admit to being utterly mystified as to how a mess of a roster like Cincinnati's won enough games to be in contention.

they have 3 guys in the top 6 offensive players in the league by wOBA (Winker, Votto, Castellanos), a RoTY candidate in India, and some pitchers who performed.

only thing mighty about the Anacostia used to be the stench. Now the SoCap bridge is better than what goes over the Ohio at Cinci.

Phillies tied the MLB record for blown saves tonight at 34.  But they have retaken the lead.  Apparently the Nats are only one game behind that dubious record with 33.  Maybe they can retake the lead now and blow it in the bottom of the inning to get to 34?
