2021-22 Washington Capitals
« Topic Start: July 18, 2021, 12:53:39 PM »
Expansion Draft tonight...

Here’s the list of protected players:

Nicklas Backstrom
Lars Eller
Evgeny Kuznetsov
Anthony Mantha
T.J. Oshie
Daniel Sprong
Tom Wilson
John Carlson
Dmitry Orlov
Trevor van Riemsdyk
Ilya Samsonov

Ovi is not under contract so he didn't need to be protected...he can sign anywhere as an UFA, but we all expect him back in DC...

Which means these are the available players:

Nic Dowd
Carl Hagelin
Garnet Hathaway
Conor Sheary
Brenden Dillon
Nick Jensen
Michal Kempny
Justin Schultz
Pheonix Copley
Vitek Vanecek

I can see where Sheary or Vanacek may be the Kraken pick, for a variety of reasons...

Note that the Canadiens have chosen not to protect Carey Price.  With 5 years remaining on his deal at $10.5MM, I find this the most intriguing potential move...

Really surprised about Price.

Only guessing...the Kraken and Habs may have worked a deal in advance..."Don't take Price, and we'll give you a future pick in addition to whomever you do pick."...or something like that...

Hope the Caps did that with Sheary and VV...

That is not the full list of Caps' unprotected players because various Hershey Bears players are on the list as well. The full list: Carr, Dowd, Fjallby, Gersich, Hagelin, Hathaway, Ovechkin, Pilon, Pinho, Raffl, Sgarbossa, Sheary, Chara, Dillon, Jensen, Johansen, Kempny, LaDue, Schilling, Schultz, Anderson, Copley, Fucale, and Vanecek.

Lundqvist was declared exempt by the NHL for understandable medical reasons.

Ovi, Chara and other are not considered "unprotected" nor are other players that are not under contract...they are UFA's and cannot be "claimed" by Seattle...

Players with less than 2 years of NHL service are exempt from the draft as well...

No...more accurately:

* All first- and second-year professionals, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection and will not be counted toward protection limits.

Oh ok, so he has more than 2 years?

I would have kept him on the list and exposed Samsonov.

Yes, they can be claimed by Seattle, but it would be silly for Seattle to do that because there is no guarantee the player will sign there.

How could you claim someone from a team when they do not belong to that team anymore?

Uh...no...they are not a part of the expansion draft sweepstakes...

The Kraken must select someone from each TEAM, a minimum of 20 players.  UFA's are not a part of any team...

They have until the 21st to sign a UFA's, which then is then counted as a pick from the former team.  They cannot claim them and hope they sign by the 21st.

Here are the rules:

Seattle must choose a minimum of 20 players under contract for the 2021-22 regular season and those with an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100 percent of the prior season's upper limit for the salary cap. The Kraken cannot buy out players chosen in the Expansion Draft earlier than the summer following its first season.

Current NHL teams can protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goalie, under the following conditions.

The Kraken also have an exclusive window from July 18-21 to interview and potentially sign pending free agents who were left unprotected in the expansion draft. If they sign a player in that window it counts as their pick from that players' former team.

* All players with no movement clauses at the time of the draft, and who decline to waive those clauses, must be protected and will be counted toward their team's applicable protection limits.

* All first- and second-year professionals, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection and will not be counted toward protection limits.

In addition, all NHL teams must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the draft:

* One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played in at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.

* Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.

* One goalie who is under contract in 2021-22 or will be a restricted free agent at the end of his current contract immediately prior to 2021-22. If a team elects to make a restricted free agent goalie available to meet this requirement, that goalie must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the team's protected list.

* Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a team's player exposure requirements unless approval is received from the NHL. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection.

Because they do belong to the team. Contracts don't expire, and players don't become UFAs, until July 28. Normally it would have been earlier, but the dates were adjusted due to the season being delayed.

Looked this up.  Sounds like they have an early “Krakk” at free agents right now and anyone signed will count as their pick.  Not clear why they would want to do that but so be it.

Thanks. I’m mostly upset that Vegas is exempt.

The deal was that they are exempt in return for forfeiting any share of the Seattle expansion fee.

Looks like Vanacek going to Seattle.

https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/kraken/2021-nhl-expansion-draft-live-updates-which-players-will-seattle-kraken-select-to-build-roster/

That blows...took a guy we need and didn't take but very little cap space with him...

I have a sweater that he and the rest of the 2014 draft picks signed.  Oh well...

We need Hank back next year...
