In 1973, Koosman and Seaver and the Mets brought me back to baseball. I had sworn off in 1971 when MLB announced that it was Shorting our second Nats team off to some tank town in Texas. Crazy George Allen announced that summer that he would lead the Redskins to the NFL playoffs in retaliation for Baseball having insulting the Nation's Capital. Everyone, including me, thought George was delusional, since the Skins had not come close to the playoffs since about 1945, but the whole town became football happy.

Hal-way through the 1973 baseball season, the Mets were no place, but then no other NL East teams were so much better. I had moved to NYC in 1969. Tug McGraw began to scream, "Ya gotta believe!" after every win. Koosman and Seaver kept winning games. Gradually, baseball became worth attention again, even though DC no longer had a team. Koosman had been hurt in 1971 and no longer had the same fastball, but he was still great.

Good for you, Jerry.

WTF with the bunt by Escobar! I get it was for a hit, but to bunt towards 3rd with a runner on 2nd? The idea is to make the third baseman field it, but the downside if it is not by the pitcher is an extra out with just one on first.

Koosman was a great pitcher.  Overshadowed by Tom Seaver and even Nolan Ryan.  Gary Gentry was not bad either.

SNY takes up commercial-break time, all of it, with an advertisement for their "PointsBet".

And maybe the beginning of the long stretch when the Nats hit nothing?

Another inning by Nolin. Of course the Nats need another run or two, but so far, Nolin, so good.

We seem to be reaching Nolin's limit. Maybe he would be best positioned as an opener type?

He's your typical 5/6/7 starter. Cant get through the lineup three times.

I know it's a small sample size, but he seems to struggle with getting through the lineup two times. That's why I wondered if the future for him might be opening. Or maybe middle relief (assuming he doesn't need a starter's warm-up time). I'm still ambivalent on the whole notion of openers, though. What do you think?

Keith Hernandez and Gary Cohen agree that Soto influences the pitching, gets the run, even without swinging. May alters everything to make the perfect pitch around Soto that he throws it into the dirt.

May has a relatively lot of WPs - 7 in about 51 innings this year.
