Phillies designated Vince Velasquez for assignment.  Still only 29.  I believe he is a free agent at year end anyway but may be someone to take a flyer on for next year.  With a short bench he could also be an asset since he can hit.  He got $4 million in his last year of arbitration so not sure what he would cost next year? $2 million?  I wanna like Vince.

well, he's currently a starter, and he projects to be a front-line starter going forward. Having learned my lesson about Bell and Kieboom, I'm not ready to write him off just yet, especially since he's started a total of 9 games in the majors in his career.

Absolutely. Need someone we can expect to give us at least a mid-3 ERA out of the pen.

Which is why i want a decent vet to be reliable. I want guys like Thompson, Machado, Murphy, and others to not have the pressure that comes with the 8th and 9th innings

Free agent at 30 years old. Makes $19 million this season. Has made 30 starts and W-L not great but 2.87 ERA, well below league average. Perfect for the Nats for the next few years, but I think the Mets will pay to keep him.

He's on my list of guys I'd love to have but I worry about paying him a bunch when we're already stuck with Strasburg and Corbin.

Not sure what it would take to get him but how about take a flyer on Michael Conforto assuming he does not take a QO from the Mets.  Down year from him.  He seems to have been up and down batting during his career so maybe catch him on the upswing and hope Long can straighten him out long-term?

I feel like Stroman is a hard regression candidate. He already doesnt strike out a lot of batters and relies on soft contact. If he loses velo, I could see his performance plummeting

Signing a good reliever or two (or a guy who might be primed for a bounceback season) is a great idea for a team like the Nationals. Flip them at the deadline for prospects: see the Brad Hand deal for how contenders are desperate to overpay for relief pitching at the deadline.

I just assumed he would get a QO. But you’re right, maybe the won’t.

I assume if he gets the Offer, he's gonna take it. No one is going to give him the deals he's looking for. He'd have to be willing to take a lot less than 18 million if he declines the QO and seeks another team.
