Uh, at this point, Im expecting Cavalli to be better than Strasburg. But I also think Strasburg is terribly overrated by Nats fans
Cavalier is 23 and never been higher than AA. At that age, Stras was a 3 year established mlb pitcher. It’s not his fault he has arm issues.

Not to butt in on a "Slate versus the board" topic which is always worth the price of admission, but Strasburg debuted in 2010 and he was just shy of his 22nd birthday. Strasburg celebrated his 23rd birthday while on the shelf with TJ, so no, he didn't have 3 years of MLB experience by that time.

Very early returns on the deadline moves are promising.  I don't enjoy being out of contention, but it's been a long time since we had a bunch of intrigue with younger players.  I don't see next year as a "tank," but rather a year where the core young guys get their chance and you add some vets on 1 or maybe 2 year deals around them and see what happens.  If we're contenders at the deadline, we should have room to add some help, but I don't expect us to really deplete this farm system we're trying to rebuild.

I think next year could be fun, and the opportunity to actually overachieve when there are no expectations will be a change of pace.  Let's see what the kids can do.

I do hold out some hope Corbin can bounce back.  He's only 31, and it's not like he's a power pitcher who lost significant velo or suffering from injuries.  He could be "fixed" and hopefully can finish strong and find something heading into next year.  With Strasburg, who knows.  It would be very sad to see him go out like this.  I worry way more about him than Corbin with the contract length and health.

Assuming the NL has the DH next season, who do you like as a Nats target?

Please no. The sentimental value is over with. Let him please retire. We should use the DH to cycle guys like Ruiz into the lineup on days he doesn't catch.

Keeping distance from the biogenesis- related and suspended might be advisable

Here's a weird factoid:

Frank Robinson, Matt Williams, and Dusty Baker each managed the Nationals in exactly 324 games. As of today, Dave Martinez has managed the Nationals in...324 games. He surpasses all those gentlemen in 5 minutes.

He will surely soon be the longest tenured Nationals manager of all time. He needs 86 more games.

Not in 5 minutes, as the Jerry Koosman number retirement ceremony is going to delay the start until around 7:30.

324 is regular season games, right? I suppose total games including post-season mixes it up?

So I'm guessing since we are seeing so much of Austin Riley that we are punting on Tres Barrera as anything but org depth?

Austin Riley would solve some problems, but not be a danger to Barrera's playing time.

I suspect Barrera at least breaks camp with the Nats along with Riley Adams, and that Ruiz is not called up until he can't accrue a full year's service time.

Ooof! I've been making this mistake since the trade. Riley. Adams. Come on brain, figure this out!

If they got married he could change his name to Riley Riley.

I feel like Tres Barrera has looked really solid at the plate. Unless they don't like his defense, I'm not certain why he wouldn't be a part of the team's plans.

I think they want to see more of Riley Adams at the plate. See if he or Ruiz can force themselves into some burn at another position.

If the idea is to see if Adams can play elsewhere, shouldn't they send him to the minors to learn another position? Or is that more of "welcome to Spring Training, your crash course in the outfield begins now" type of thing.

Can Ruiz catch?
From MLB.cm:

"One of the premier contact hitters in the Minors, Ruiz has impressive bat control and a disciplined approach that has limited his strikeout rate to 10 percent in his first six pro seasons and just 7 percent in the upper Minors. A switch-hitter, he has much more power from the left side, where he hit 28 of his 30 pro homers entering 2021. He spent last summer at the alternate training site working on unlocking his power, making an adjustment to his lower half that helped him improve the quality of his contact.

Ruiz has the tools to be a solid defender but lacks consistency behind the plate. He's agile with soft hands and good framing skills, and his pure arm strength grades as better than average. He can get lackadaisical with his receiving, however, and his transfer and accuracy with his throws still need improvement. Nonetheless, he gives the Nats a legitimate potential position-player star, which the system lacked before his arrival."

I recall reading a Dodgers blog that basically was excited about his improvement defensively over the last several years. Apparently he had a long way to go when he first signed. Allowed Will Smith to jump over him (although clearly Smith is also better offensively than defensively, is he not?).

My one slice of watching him at Rochester: seemed surprised when Syracuse tried a double-steal, threw weakly to second well to the wrong side of the bag. I guess we will see more than an inning of The Real Ruiz. Here's hoping.
