Nats built a bit of a pad after dropping game 1 in Miami, but have been using it up.

5   Washington   64-89   .418   15.0   Won 3   5-5
6   Miami          64-88   .421   15.5   Lost 2   4-6
7   CHI Cubs          67-85   .441   18.5   Lost 2   2-8
8   Minnesota   68-85   .444   19.0   Won 3   5-5
http://www.tankathon.com/mlb

4th is now realistically out of reach.  We and Miami have 7 more wins than the Pirates, so the Pirates clinch a worse record (Tragic Number) a combination of 4 more losses or Nats wins.  Same for Miami.  Our TN over the Cubs is 7 and is 6 for the Twins.

Miami has 3 at the Rays this weekend, then 4 at the Mets, before closing hosting with the Phillies. Sticking my neck out, I think we slip behind them over the weekend.

Cubs have 4 with the Cards this weekend and 3 next, with 3 with the pirates in between.  Figure the Cards push hard to win this weekend then maybe start to take the foot off the gas next.Twins final 9 are the Jays and Tigers at home, then at the Royals to finish.

Bullpen almost got it done last night, but can’t always rely on that

Entering the final week:
http://www.tankathon.com/mlb
4    Pittsburgh     58-97   .374   8.5   Won 1   4-6
5    Washington   64-92   .410   14.0   Lost 3   4-6
6    Miami          64-91   .413   14.5   Lost 5   3-7
7    CHI Cubs       67-89   .429   17.0   Lost 6   1-9
8    Minnesota    69-87   .442   19.0   Lost 2   5-5

In terms of tragic numbers, Pittsburgh can be no worse than 4th pick with any combination of 2 Pirate losses or Nats wins.  OTOH, Minnesota cannot finish 5th with 2 more Nats losses or Twins wins.  Tragic number for the Cubs is 4. Cubs have put on a nice run of tanking to get back into the fight for 5th/ 6th.

Marlins have 4 at the Mets, including a doubleheader tomorrow, starting Tuesday, then finish at home vs. the Phils.  Nats have 3 at Colorado starting tonight, a travel day, then close vs. Boston at home.

tragic number of 1 for the Cubs, who are in 7th.  It's now just down to 5th or 6th with the Marlins.

Hmmm.  We are tied with the Marlins for 5th worst record.  We can finish no lower than 5th worst and no higher than 6th worst.  The Tankathon list has us 5th, but we won the season series against the Marlins. I would have thought that, by beating them, we'd lose the tie breaker, but it seems the opposite.  Maybe that's a measure against tanking?

Interesting that all games on Sunday are at 3 pm ET (give or take a few minutes).  Maybe it's always been this way and I haven't noticed.  All kinds of interesting scenarios for the AL WC.  Hope we can be spoilers and the Orioles revert to form and Oriole properly.

It's been this way for a few years and it is fun when things come down to the last day.

Tiebreaker is previous season record. The Marlins had a better record than the Nats.

Nats picked Anthony Rendon with the 6th pick in the 2011 draft. Anything less than another Tony 2-bags will be failure, and then the Lerners should fire Rizzo!

I think RZ was the last #5 pick.  Ryan Braun was #6. as noted below, RZ was #4, Braun #5  Tulo was in that draft too.

#6s were Detwiler and Rendon.  I like our batting average with #5.

If he hadn't been injured, he would not have been there at #6.

I remember. That used to be a Rizzo specialty. The college star hitter than nobody wanted because he was hurt. The high school pitcher, like Giolito, that teams skipped for the same reason. That was 2012.

Do it again, Mike!

Zimm was picked at #4, just ahead of Ryan Braun

Aaron Crow was only #9, who did he think he was?!  The baseball gods have spoken, which is why he is now running 4H piglet races.
