Smithian starts the 2022 Donovan Casey watch.

Am I the only one who thinks Victor Robles is a couple bad defensive plays away from the team DFAing him and rolling with Stevenson or Casey in CF? I know Stevenson is off 40-man, but he is still in system.

I think they can handle the inconsistent bat more easily than they do the glove.

Smithian starts the 2022 Donovan Casey watch.

I think he's right handed Andrew Stevenson. Which is a serviceable #4/5.

If Robles struggles and is removed from equation, I'd be fine with Casey splitting time with Stevenson or Fox in CF. Not sure those guys will win the Nationals games, but I don't think they will lose the Nats games with their CF defense.

I wouldn't even mind Fox there.

Grant and Danny had the Rochestr pbp guy on their baseball podcast and he said roughly "Casey has a good an outfield arm as there is in pro baseball".

Donovan Casey cannot hit AAA pitching. Maybe he has a good arm, but he's hitting .215 in Rochester this year, and hit .180 there at the end of last season.

Seems to be hitting flies the opposite way this year instead of pulled grounders off of his batted ball distribution (sorry, VLM :) ).
https://www.fangraphs.com/players/donovan-casey/sa915654/stats?position=OF . Was not such a fly hitter in AA, but was a pull fly hitter during his breakout in Rancho Cucamonga (A+ in Cali, so take it with a grain of salt).

He doesn't deserve a roster spot even as a defensive call up if he Ks 35% in the minors.  Harrisburg looks like a short sample illusion.  No rush now for him.  He's not Robles, and Thomas and even DSG are ahead of him.

And Casey is 26. He's heading in the direction of all of those 29-year-olds still in AAA who retire at 30.

Today's puff piece about Casey, who is 26. Is he still a prospect?

Still hitting .215 with 6 homers, an OPS of .676, plus 12 walks and 61 strikeouts: https://www.milb.com/player/donovan-casey-661541

Not a prospect anymore, but he could put some things together and get a call up next year and could put up a year similar to a light MAT year or a Steven Souza type.

DFA'd, will lock the thread if he's claimed or elects free agency.

Casey cleared waivers and has accepted an assignment back to Rochester.

according to this link, Casey had to accept the assignment to Rochester if not claimed off of waivers as this was his first trip through the DFA process.

You mean you doubt he gets added back to the 40-man? No way he gets added, unless something like magic happens next year.

yes.  I don't know if he's eligible to become a minor league free agent after this year.  If he is, what I suspect is he'd elect for free agency and try to sign with another team and try to hook on as a 5th outfielder type with some D and a little pop that can be stashed in the minors as depth.  It might be hard to find a thinner organization than the Nats, so maybe he sticks even if he has a chance to walk.

The guy isn't far removed from being at least useful on defense and showed more like a TTO hitter at AA. I, along with many, are way down on the Nats ability to develop any player who doesn't have otherworldly talent, so we can hope if there is a new analytics and development department with new ownership, he might stick around and see if he can turn into something.

Dude is playing low A ball with the FredNats. Give hike credit for sticking with it.  Just had a two RBI single but has not been hitting much.

I think we was down there for a rehab assignment. Harrisburg is where he belongs, at least theoretically. Frees up some OF space in Fredericksburg

Donovan Casey (acquired in the Scherzer/Turner trade) made his first professional appearance on the mound today in relief, but it was more than a position player mop-up job.

Casey has reportedly been working with the Senators staff on the side. He threw a clean inning.
