Completed deadline deals - 2021
« Topic Start: July 29, 2021, 11:49:03 AM »
Can we start a thread for completed trades?

Nationals picked up Riley Adams, #17 prospects in Blue Jays system. Power hitting catcher who is hitting it hard in AAA and has gotten some time in majors. For a reliever on an expiring contract, I'll take it.

Edit - Hand to blue Jays for Riley Adams- C.  Please put names of trade, positions, and level of players when you post a trade goinf forward

That's a really good deal.  I expect the Nats picked up a chunk of Hand's contract, probably most of it.

That's a pretty good return. We desperately need catchers and he seems at minimum a backup.

Pisses me off that we have Rivera up when we need to be givinn Barrera time to see what we have in him

Nationals get Catcher Riley Adams for Hand.

Yeesh. I know Hand's stock has dropped a bit, but that is not quite the return I'd hope for. 25 year old AAAA catcher.. We already have a few of those.

Dammit, they're my AL team.
Dougherty says the deal is done. Hand to the Blue Jays. Tanner Rainey is your new closer everyone.

I wonder if we move Gomes by the end of the week and let Adams start the rest of the season with Avila. Barrera showed some flashes too in his brief stint.

Move Gomes and (probably cut) Avila. Riley Adams or Tres Barrera should be catching every day, with Reetz next up if there is an injury.

Seems like we're OK at catcher with Reetz, Barrera, and Pineda, not to mention Read.

Adams is a big guy -- 6'4, 246. Listed as C/LF.

Blue Jays fans not happy about Hand pickup. They like riley Adams, but looks like they have a glut of catches and needed to move one. I'm giving Rizzo a :w: for this trade.

I mean this without irony; he is probably our best power prospect in the system.

Drew Mendoza has had a terrible go in AA. Adams isn't a world changing prospect, but I won't be surprised if he is pushed into duty at 1B/LF.

Sad how he is an expendable piece for Blue Jays and I'm thinking he probably makes the Nationals 25 man next year and if he shows a pulse at the plate he may be getting starts away behind the plate.

Blue Jays picked up Brad Hand's deferred money!!

Quote
Brad Hand deal with Nationals doesn't involve cash considerations going either way per source

So #BlueJays take on Hand's $10.5 million salary, $6.5 million of which is deferred
If accurate, Rizzo fleeced them!

Which means that if the Nats picked up the tab, then the return would have been better.

This sounds REALLY BAD. Ownership is going to forfeit better prospects because they are going to want to move money instead of actually rebuild this team.

Not really, as it isn't that much money.  Hand is a rental, the Blue Jays are well aware of that.

You're looking for something to complain about. This was a good trade when I assumed the Nationals picked up the tab.

Be happy. We may not like budgets, but this is reality and they exist. Every bit of financial flexibility helps.

Hopefully they’re saving money on the small deals so they don’t have to on the big ones (Scherzer) but we will see

Maybe I am over-reacting. The potential return may have capped out at Riley Adams level. It's very possible that any acquiring team just would have rather paid for Hand than give up more talent.

As poorly as he's pitched at times this year, that was the best type of player they were going to get.  He's probably a setup man at best on most playoff contenders, not a closer.  Thus, he didn't get a rental closer haul.

Most fans wanted him DFA'ed at this point anyways, so few are going to complain about it.

I just don't want ownership to force Rizzo's hand in having any trades where the return is lessened just so ownership can save money. The owners signed these deals, own up to them and suck up the money. If their actual plan was "one championship and now we just develop no one and be cheap" this franchise is going to be very un-fun to watch for decades.

if we're going to eat money i'd rather eat money in a scherzer deal where we can really maximize a return

With two months left in the season, no expiring free agent contract is going to lead to much "eating" of money.  Max is owed $120 million for the last 6 2/3rds seasons and will be paid by the Nats in full.  Maybe the team he's traded to will pick up 1/21st of the deferred money, but probably not.

We were already below the tax threshold before any deal, so you'd think we could assume all of the payments due Scherzer, Hand, etc... and still be below the CBT threshold.

Adams maybe our starting catcher next season. Good return for Hand and ultimately proves the signing to be a great move by Rizzo.

We’ll see how Barrera does the rest of the season.
