The A's fleeced Rizzo...
that's the Millas deal? He's doing well. Little blurb in the ftp master thread

Yes. Getting a potentially good starting catcher for two months and a lost playoff game of Gomes and Harrison is easily a win for Rizzo.

Riley Adams trade was a steal at times. Still best of the deadline on pure imbalance in our favor.

As trade seemed underwhelming at the time. Still a bit confused. Unless we think Ruiz may end up in the corner

The walk/K ratio and batting average millas has posted this year in his first year of pro ball are astounding for a guy regarded as a defense first catcher.  Coming into this year mlb.com had him with a 40 hit and 45 power.  I bet he ends up in the 12-15 range of our prospects after this solid year.

I haven’t researched him much. I guess if we have a catching glut then he can be a solid trade piece.

Millas won’t be ready until 2023 anyway.  Next year we see how Keibert looks both offensively and defensively and go from there

Who is the better defensive catcher?  Ruiz can play 1B if he can hit.  Hope Bell hits next year and flip him for more prospects at the deadline.

It is early.

And as someone who wrote off Barrera as organizational depth, he’s looked really good. I think he may be an every day major league backstop.

I think Ruiz and Barrera are our catchers on Opening Day 2022. And hopefully Ruiz or Adams flash enough power we can carry three catchers with Adams or Ruiz moonlighting in left field.

Rizzo on what went into trading Scherzer's contract:

I cringed a bit on the comment about finances affecting who we got in return. Helps a bit we got two Top 50 prospects.

Can only hope the tens of millions saved this deadline help the team afford Juan Soto when his contract discussions get into territory not before seen.

I think we all know that the Nats are on the hook for the deferred payments of Max's contract while playing in a Nts uniform. Roughly it was 12M left for the rest of the season. If there was a package offered up for Max better than Ruiz straight up where the Nats had to eat the rest of his contract, I'd honestly be surprised.

I still can't believe Guzman turned into Roark. I also can't believe Souza turned into Trea Turner and Joe Ross. Finally, I am floored that Jon Lester netted anything other than a bag of baseballs.

Brad Hand has been DFA'd.

What a trade. Salary dump and got a player who will be on the 26 man for a while.

Hand and Lester. Somehow Rizzo managed to trade them both and the return has been way better than expected. I think we all would have taken a bag of balls for them both.

after the 2022 season? At least for Ruiz and Gray.  Both are expected to be significant contributors next year.

Depends on the trade.

Hand for Adams, Lester for Thomas, arguably already successful.

No "arguably" about it.  Addition by subtraction on the field, plus salary savings and two guys who aren't terrible now and might be useful pieces even though not stars.

Salary relief and low minor flyers would have been wins for Hand and Lester. Getting salary relief along with guys who at worst will be valuable backups is a home run.

The Dodgers trade will take years to sort out. I'm not certain the Dodgers can "lose" the trade since they're going for it and they traded for two studs. But how the return for the Nationals plays out will determine if the Nationals made a smart trade or completely misevaluated the prospects.

And even the Nats' piece is a challenge that largely centers on Turner.  It's unknowable unless Rizzo says what they could have gotten for Scherzer alone.  And the evaluation on how much giving up Turner matters centers on what offers he would have gotten as a standalone and how bad next year's team is, which in turn depends on Ruiz and Gray.  There's a financial component to that deal too, of course: Scherzer was still owed a fair amount this year and Turner's going to make a lot in arbitration next year (though still less than his open-market value).  I don't care about that, but it seems clear that the team does.

Ruiz and Gray could go into the HOF and Grant Paulsen would still think we got bad value.
