You guys must be waiting for the Browns to make the super bowl so you can call it a classic matchup.

any matchup involving an Original 6 team has more of a "classic" connotations than one involving a team added in the past couple of decades.  I'll even give a WHA team or a "Western Division" team that stayed in its location since the first expansion a "classic" feel.  Coyotes, Lightning, Blue Jackets :spaz:
Not sure what you mean. The original six expansion teams started in 1967 were the Flyers, Penguins, Blues, Stars, Kings and Seals (who essentially merged with the North Stars after being in Cleveland a couple seasons. The Avalanche franchise has been in the NHL since 1979 so it’s been in the league as long as Edmonton.

I root against any FL team in any sport - first choice, Oilers; second choice, anyone but Lightning
Not a Lightning fan but they have built quite the franchise. And I always find it interesting that they have a coach who didn’t even play hockey.

all the expansion teams from 67 expansion were placed in one division labeled the western division or conference or whatever. I consider the Flyers, Penguins, and blues "classic" squads. I can never get used to hockey in LA, but my rule would sweep in the kings. Buffalo and the Caps are ????. WWHA would be the Oilers, Jets but not the Hurricanes because they changed names and moved.

I can count five of the original six as classic. But not the Rangers. Still my favorite Rangers highlight.

The Rangers are one of the first teams I think of when I think about the NHL. They've got a classic look and feel about them, at least to me. Doesn't matter how many times they've won a championship, really...

I guess the Reds in baseball are like that for me.

No scoring so far tonight although Colorado has a two man advantage now.

I want Colorado and Tampa because that will be the best hockey and we have the drama of Tampa going for three in a row which I don’t think has happened since the 1980s.

No goals in period one. That might not happen again.

The "Original Six" is all a myth anyway because those teams weren't the original teams and the league had more than six teams prior to what is now called the "Original Six" era. The league was founded with four teams (the Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, the Ottawa Senators, and a team in Toronto that some years later became the Leafs), although that was reduced to three within a couple of weeks when the Wanderers folded after their arena burned down. The Quebec Bulldogs joined the next year and subsequently moved to Hamilton; that team folded after its players went on strike. Meanwhile, the Montreal Maroons and Boston Bruins joined in 1924. The Hamilton team was replaced by the New York Americans in 1925; the Pittsburgh Pirates also joined during that year. Then in 1926 the league added the New York Rangers, Detroit Cougars (later the Falcons and then the Red Wings), and Chicago Blackhawks. That gave the league ten teams.

The Depression caused financial problems. The Pirates moved to become the Philadelphia Quakers but folded after one year; the Senators suspended operations at the same time (today's franchise is not technically related to the original one), returned after one year, then became the St. Louis Eagles and subsequently folded. The Maroons suspended operations prior to the 1938 season and the league never allowed the franchise to be reactivated. The Americans tried to move to Brooklyn but lost so many players to World War II that they also wound up suspending operations; like the Maroons, the league never allowed them back in (purportedly at the behest of the Rangers' ownership) and that left the six teams now called the "Original Six."

Expansion got goofy when it went into parts of the country that looked good demographically but had not history of hockey.  None of those cities - Dallas, Phoenix, Miami, Tampa, Atlanta, Charlotte, San Jose, Anaheim, LA - can ever be classic hockey locations.  At least Denver has a great history of college hockey.  I'd throw in Nashville and Columbus, too, but at least Columbus can support D1 hockey.  Madison is a better hockey town than Tampa.

Tampa has quite the fanbase and you see TBL stickers all over the cars here in Orlando. We will see what happens when they go back to being mediocre or bad but I think it’s a solid hockey town now. Lots of transplanted northerners who have embraced a new team. Not unlike DC. Miami on the other hand seems not to care even with a dynamic team.

Wow. I didn’t think my “the Rangers vs Oilers is a more classic matchup” take would spark so much angsty conversation…

Thinking tonight will be a great game and the Oilers will win.  I love the game intro with the Inuit tribe guy and then having the singer in the stands and letting the fans sing O Canada after the first verse.  Corny stuff but I eat it up.

Cake Makar is the closest thing I have seen to Bobby Orr.
