what was odd was that the NHL almost immediately shifted from the Islanders run to the Oilers.

A lot of folks thought it would happen a year earlier. Edmonton losing the first time to the islanders was a heck of an upset

Flyers won two in a row.
Followed by Canadiens winning four in a row.
Followed by the Islanders winning four in a row.
Followed by Edmonton winning 4 of 5.

Era of the dynasties.

Edit. To add to that there have been. Four back to back titles since then but not more than that. Tampa will try this year. Pittsburgh did twice and Detroit once.

that freaking goal by Steve Smith into the Oilers' own net against Calgary in 1986.  If the Oilers hadn't managed to eliminate themselves, they would have gone to 7 finals in 8 years and won at least 5, and probably 6 of them. (Yes, I know it's hyperbole to argue that the one goal by Smith cost them a series they lost in 7 games).

And Edmonton won another cup in 1994 in New York.

Canada Olympic roster is out.  A couple of familiar names.

USA roster.

2 Yale grads - O'Neill and Agostino.  This is Brian O'Neill's second Olympics as he played in the last farce.

that's just a bonehead, a-hole move that destroys the narrative that refs look for him due to his past and he gets suckered into most of his chippy calls. no f'ng way that was less than deliberate.  The face shield is obviously why he thought he could do it.   I often bought into the narrative, but he deserves about as severe a suspension as you can get when you don't hurt someone.

https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-bruins/2022/02/19/brad-marchand-suspension-upheld-gary-bettman-bruins-nhl/

6 games.  Basically, even though the NHLPA argued 4 games and had a host of like incidents, and there was no intent to (or actual) injury, Bettman said, "nobody has MArchand's track record," it was stupid, and he's bad for the league's image.  Apparently the goalie said to him, "how about that f...ing save?"

Quote
“To say that Mr. Marchand overreacted to that comment would be an understatement,” Bettman wrote in his ruling.

The NHLPA argued that the suspension should have been four games at most, comparing it to other cases. Bettman, however, said it’s a unique situation, because there’s “no player who has a disciplinary history” like Marchand. Even Marchand referred to his actions in the incident as “stupid.”
...
“Mr. Marchand’s behavior and lack of judgment in respect of these incidents did not meet acceptable NHL standards,” Bettman wrote. “He created a distraction which reflected poorly on himself, on his team and on the League as a whole, and as such, I find he also deserves the penalty he received.”

This is Marchand’s eighth suspension, which is the most among active players. He’s eligible to return Thursday, Feb. 24, against the Kraken.

I find the honesty refreshing.  Also, Tom Wilson better stay clear of any disciplinary hearings if the reputation standard is what Bettman's using. He's only on 5 now.

Watching on TNT/TBS is annoying because they have separate Apps.  So cannot toggle between games like I can when on ESPN.  The broadcasts seem better though.

Toronto looks good.  Might be their year.

All four series played yesterday now tied at 2. Chance of that happening again today except for Colorado.

Five game 7s over two days. Would be funny to see all the Canadian teams lose. Sorry Ali.

One down.  Two to go.  The Leafs are just remarkable underachievers.  Luckily the press in Toronto is friendly and will go easy on them.
