Pena wasn’t going to pop on a lot of international-signing rankings during the 2017-18 period because of his size at 5-foot-8, and the Nationals swooped in to get him for $150,000 out of the Dominican Republic – well below some of the larger bonuses given to Nationals infielders signed around the same time. Despite that bonus and his stature, Pena didn’t need long to find a way to stand out in the Washington system. He posted a .386 OBP in the Dominican Summer League in 2018 and then won the Gulf Coast League batting title with a .359 average over 37 games the following year at age 18. His .935 OPS placed fourth among GCL qualifiers.

Pena has a simple, short swing from both sides of the plate and shows good pitch recognition for someone of his age and experience level. The Nationals believe in his ability to handle velocity, though that will be challenged the higher he climbs. He will need to show an above-average hit tool at every stop because the power doesn’t project to be there as he matures. Pena split time at shortstop, second base and third in his stateside debut, and the Nationals came away most impressed by his work at the four spot in last year’s instructional league, particularly when it came to his ability to track down balls to his left. He shows solid speed elsewhere on the diamond as well.

Listed as a top 30 prospect in our system, Pena is hitting leadoff most nights and playing 2B in Fredericksburg.

.201/.283/.280 in 213 PA. 3 HR 4 2B 8 SB. Looks like a utility infielder type with a good glove and speed. Someone to keep an eye on while he moves up the system. Still only 20 and getting a ton of ABs in A ball.
