Getting harder and harder to justify Zimmerman’s spot on this team versus someone more versatile

Not really. He’s always been a streaky hitter. He’ll streak good again.

Bell is not more versatile.   He’s an awful
Defensive first baseman.   Zimmy is the better hitter.

Not true over the past 6 weeks.

Slate swooping in and stealing the thread I’ve been hinting at since Spring Training.

Now when he goes on a 2-31 streak, it isn’t my fault.

OK, I was wrong, you can still justify Zimmerman.
Bell vs LHP: .193 / .299 / .404
Zimm: .313 / .323 / .531

Zimmerman is only batting .198 vs RHP (versus Bell who is hitting .267), and .169 in games he has started.

small end of a platoon, can't play anything but 1B, isn't a good pinch hitter (usually needs reps to get going). love zimm but he's here for more sentimental reasons than anything baseball related. decent bell insurance in case he gets hurt but sucks having a guy on the bench who only gets a handful of ABs every 2 weeks

I think Zimm will heat up again and when the season is over will have proven to be a huge bargain at $1 million.

But with Josh Bell being constrained to 1B, I think next season we need to have a right handed platoon partner who can play some games in the corner outfield if needed. The fact Martinez is even answering questions about Bell in LF shows how constrained our roster is in an era where roster versatility is rightly sought after.

The only reason I entertain Zimm in 2022 is if the NL adopts the DH full-time. Then he has some value.

You know, I was just thinking that what we needed at DH was a below average hitter

I can't see Zimmerman coming back, but if he does we have to have a more versatile roster. Josh Harrison is our only fielder right now we comfortably move around.

I hope Zimmerman retires this offseason. He maybe could come back for one last run, but I'd rather he go out on a not bad note.

So Bell's season started on April 12.

If you take away the first month of the season for him, and start at May 9 (effectively when his second month of regular at bats started) he's hitting .286/.342/.535.

Its been a consistent performance as well.
May 9-31: .288/.338/.515
June: .282/.363/.521
July: .287/.333/.552
August (as of Aug 6): .286/.318/.571

That is remarkably consistent for a player who has struggled with consistency. If this continues, his last two seasons are, rffectively, 130 wRC+ seasons at first base.

I think if the Nats cant get an extension this offseason, Josh Bell probably becomes more expensive than is feesible to extend/re-sign during or after next season (if he continues to perform like this). He's a younger version of Rizzo if he keeps it up with the bat

Yeah I'd approach Boras and see what Bell is looking for in an extension. Him becoming a legit good hitter for us makes everything so much easier.

Oh. He's a Boras client.

In that case, trade him to the Red Sox in the offseason

The Nationals should absolutely plan on resigning Josh Bell. He is a good 1B. He won't be cheap, but he isn't going to cost so much next offseason that he'll be a major factor in resigning Soto.

Josh Bell will be a good slugger for a while. Resign him. Have him behind Soto for a few years.

If he repeats his May 9 - present performance, Bell will easily command 20+ million AAV over the course of 6-8 years

he's coming off an arb-2 contract that is for $6.5MM.  He will not top $10MM next year.  Do you see if he bites at 3 year $15MM AAV? that locks him in for  the Soto era.

For 3 years? You can ask, but Boras' secretary probably laughs and hangs up

Dang if he’s worth that much than we should trade him this offseason.  Sounds like the acquiring team would be getting some good surplus value for next year.

Right, we don't really believe the Nats will compete next year, do we?  Therefore trade him in the offseason.  It's the only logical choice.

If you're an optimist then wait until the trade deadline again and settle for something less in return.

Funny...Rizzo said nobody was interested in Bell at the trade deadline...

Well then we shouldn’t be extending him for more than $10M a year

he is a  first baseman / DH, and you can get pretty good bats for around that money or less.  It's not a high price position.  That said, he looks pretty solid and young, so I would be willing to go a bit more and lock him in.
