yesterday might have been a day to go with an opener, like Finnegan, and then bring in Fedde.  The top of the order for the Padres is very tough, so, if you needed Fedde to start to go a 3rd time through the order due to bullpen overuse, then you might want to have him come in around the middle of the order (#5) so he lines up to face the bottom of the order for his 3 time and you pull him before he faces 1-4 a 3rd time.  That maybe gets you 5-6 innings our of 1 reliever plus Fedde.
