Soto is the only one of those that has any chance of historical significance.
That is one more than the Giants have.

JCA Note - this conversation started in a GDT about Nats underperforming their historical offensive production.  It got twisted a bit into whether Posey and other catchers measure up to HoF standards based on their offense.  The overall hall-worthiness of Posey, Mauer, and I'll add Molina is a fun discussion. First ballot, eventually in, borderline. Throw in any other catcher since the turn of the century if you want to make your case, other than Wil Nieves

I didn’t say allstars or hall of famers

I specifically said historically good
Posey is historically good. He is a first ballot HoFer 5 years after he hangs em up.

Buster Posey 1.008 OPS this season
Brandon Crawford - .903
Darin Ruf - .882
Steven Duggar - .861
Brandon Belt - .803

Yea, cant imagine why the Giants are in first place.

Which is why you quoted me. Go back to la la land where Josh Bell is a "historically good offensive player" and Buster Posey isnt a HoFer.

Seriously?  I love Zimm more than anyone but that’s not a fair comparison

He’s the 14th best catcher ever. He’s not a lock, but he’s getting there

Ok, borderline. But not a lock, which is what I was responding to.

catcher . Mvp. Hall of Famer

Joe Mauer? Higher ops, higher war, mvp, catcher.

Is going to make it anyway.

Mauer isn't eligible yet, and Posey was also the best position player on 3 WS winners.  He's not there yet, but Posey just turned 34.  He could potentially have quite a strong case with a good remainder of this season and one more.  Considering how he looks right now, that seems like a reasonably solid bet.

It is a nice discussion and I may move some of this to out of town, but Posey is a good  HoF case. 1st ballot is a stretch, but I think he's a likely. Some positions you can't straight compare offensive stats. The idea that a corner infielder with lesser O than a catcher is a comparable "star" I think is preposterous. But, how two of the best catchers of the 2000s compare to HoF standards is a good thing to talk about. Molina, Posey, then Mauer is my order.

Posey is a better catcher than Mike Piazza, who made the Hall on his hitting, I'd say. Posey would have my vote. Catcher needs catching, game-calling, and hitting. That's why Del Crandall was outstanding, all-star, and so was Yogi Berra.

A problem with Posey: he plays out west someplace where we rarely see him.

Piazza made it solely on his bat. Posey is a complete catcher. Molina made himself into a good offensive player for a few years, but his D gets him in. Mauer I think will be short. I think his time at first made him less outstanding

Mauer looks a lot like Joe Torre.
