Update on our DL boys
« on: June 11, 2007, 11:27:36 pm »
From the Nats website:

Injury report: Right-hander John Patterson (right elbow and biceps) threw two innings in a simulated game on Sunday in Potomac. He threw 35 pitches, and 23 of them were for strikes. He threw both fastballs and curveballs. Patterson is scheduled to throw a side-session on Tuesday in Baltimore and then a three-inning, 50-pitch rehab start with Class A Potomac on Friday.

Right-hander Jerome Williams (labrum tear) is scheduled for a three-inning, 50-pitch rehab start Friday with Double-A Harrisburg.

Right-hander Jason Bergmann (sore elbow) is scheduled for a three-inning, 50-pitch rehab start Friday with Triple-A Columbus.

Mike O'Connor (sore elbow) threw 47 pitches in his three innings with Potomac on Sunday. He threw fastballs, curveballs and changeups. He will next throw a side-session on Tuesday with Double-A Harrisburg.

Alex Escobar (separated right shoulder) went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a walk as the designated hitter for Potomac on Sunday. Escobar is now slated to join Harrisburg and continue his rehab.

Where do you find this?  I go to "injuries" and the most recent update is 5/18 so obviously I'm not looking in the right place.

Thanks. But there really should be some place on the web site where they list status for injured players.

Hill, for example.  (Shawn/Shaun - I'll be darn if I can figure out his first name.)  What is his current status?  And Ayala?  Where do you go to find that information?

Yes, that would be very helpful to have.

Found something on Ayala:

Quote
Nationals RP Luis Ayala, who is on the 60-day DL, continued his recovery from ligament replacement surgery in his right elbow by throwing 2/3 of an inning Friday for Class A Potomac on a rehabilitation assignment. "I was working on my location, throwing balls down and working my sinker on the corners. I threw pitches with good location. It felt good to come back," he said.
...
Ayala will only be ready to rejoin the Nationals pitching staff when he is able to throw on consecutive days.

Shawn Hill's status:

Quote
RHP Shawn Hill got good news about his sore right elbow after visit with Dr. Mark Schickendantz of the Cleveland Clinic Thursday, but Hill said he's still unsure when he'll be able to begin throwing again. Schickendantz advised Hill not to throw again until his strained left shoulder is healed.

More on Ayala from June 10th:

Quote
Luis Ayala has made three appearances for Class A Potomac on his rehab assignment, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings.

Manager Manny Acta said Ayala, who is recovering from ligament replacement surgery in his right elbow, will report to Class AAA Columbus, where he will throw on back-to-back days before he is ready to return to the majors.

Good to see that a lot of them are making progress towards returning.  Keep it up!

I see what you mean. The "injuries" section on the team site is outdated.

Alex Escobar (separated right shoulder) went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a walk as the designated hitter for Potomac on Sunday. Escobar is now slated to join Harrisburg and continue his rehab.

Ladson keeps reporting Escobar's injury as a separated shoulder, but it was reported at the time of the injury as a dislocated shoulder, which is a totally different injury.  I've sent a note to Ladson regarding the inconsistency, but to no avail.

All of our pitchers seem to be at the same point in rehab. If they come up all at the same time, I feel a rush of wins coming.

Reporting on the team's injuries has been very slipshod.

I wish that would be the case, but I dont think we've been losing due to poor pitching

Rotoworld usually compiles the best consolidated news updates on the team. The team page is usually more up to date than the injury section which is more of the MLB official update on transactions and official status versus news items like bullpen sessions and so forth. The Post and mlb.com are typically the sources for this news, but at least rotoworld is one stop shopping for all local and national news along with editorial comments and criticism.

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/clubhouse_news.aspx?sport=MLB&majteam=WAS

I have put a suggestion on the WNFF suggestion thread to include the rotoworld Nationals News Widget as part of the homepage of this site so that everyone can have one place to look for updates instead of having to rely upon others posting the news.

The pitching on our last homestand (3-6) was particularly bad.

I'm pretty skeptical about Ayala...I mean, 16 months is a long time skills to just quietly erode away.  Of course, with Guze on a tear right now, I guess anything is possible.

It takes a long time to come back from Tommy John surgery.  Some pitchers take as long as 2 years or even more.  Yet most do recover successfully.
