I noticed today that at least in my area, cicadas are starting to colonize trees that definitely didn't exist 17 years ago. So there is hope that if you do not have cicadas on your block today, you might have them in 2038.

I've only seen a very small number of cicada holes in Leesburg, but today I finally heard them in loud enough numbers that it sounds like an alarm bell going off in the distance. I'm hoping that will translate to seeing more of them; as Ali noted, it's so rare that it's worth a bit of squick.

Something that lives in Arlington is biting cicadas in half and discarding the one half it doesn't eat. I saw a half-eaten cicada still moving this morning.

Heard a story that some restaurant was offering local cicadas on the menu but the government stepped in and said the only way they could do it is if they imported them from South America.

We had new landscaping planted 18 months ago, they're really shredding a few select, tasty trees we have.

My friend loaded a decibel meter on his phone, and my yard's consistently getting around 72db. However, we did a hike around the 'hood and one place we were consistently cresting 80. I'm not up on how the scale works, but he hiked in Shenandoah and the sound levels were 1,000 higher in his yard than in SNP, which has few cicadas.

Pretty sure it's logarithmic, so 80 would be 10x louder than 70, 100x 60, and 10000 times louder than 50. I can't remember where hearing damage starts, but I believe enough of them can do it.

I was wondering (but too lazy to look it up) what the OSHA standard is for workplace noise levels, and how it compares. Morning to mid-day seems loudest, thankfully they taper down at night.

Heading out of town for 2 weeks today, so that's probably it for my 2021 cicada season. I'm pretty satisfied with how it went: I got to see nymphs coming out of the ground which I've never seen before. My only regret is that I didn't see any cicadas laying eggs, nor did I notice any of their slit-making activity on local trees. It's crazy to think about how long 17 years is. My daughter is a toddler today and she will be in college the next time these cicadas come to Arlington.

My parents live in Chicago, which is due to get their next periodic cicada brood in 2024. I'll make sure to visit them that summer.

I understand that not everyone shares my cicada geekery, but I find these emergences to be just amazing. I spent a lot of time this weekend on the bike soaking in the sounds (and a bit of cicada pee). Most of Rock Creek Park--but especially Kensington, Maryland around the Mormon Tabernacle--is force 11 cicada right now.

funny. I did a ride up and back on the capital crescent yesterday PM. I'm getting used to hitting a few in mid-flight. I stopped to meet a friend for some tea / ice tea at Quartermaine's at Bethesda Ave or whatever the CCT dumps onto. When I went back to my bike, I had a nice cicada resting right on my front derailleur. I guess it liked cheap Shimano parts.
