None yet.  I'll need to leave the devil's playground to get my cicada fix it seems...same as in 2004.

So much development in the last 17 years. Lots of woodlands gone, cicadas along with them. I've got some holes in the ground, but haven't seen a critter yet.

I went to a public park and it did not disappoint: tons of holes and husks everywhere, but I only saw one live adult.

We didn’t have any in 2004 in our neighborhood, which makes sense because it was built in 1992–93. No idea what to expect this time, but I haven’t seen any yet.

Haven't seen any as yet; as I recall my south Arlington neighbourhood was not heavily infested with them in 1987 or 2004.

in 2004, I saw quite a few on Rte 1 between CC and Potomac Yards.  I don't know if they were from the Yards at that time (lots of dirt, and near a residential neighborhood on the south side of the highway.

There were a bunch in Roslyn in 2004.  They were flying into my 7th floor windows all day.

Just went on a walk in south Arlington, a few blocks south of the Columbia Pike between Glebe and George Mason. There were a lot of cicadas out - we saw a lot of nymphs crawling out of the ground and climbing up trees to molt. So cool!

they aren't the smartest bugs, are they? I suppose they aren't used to tall buildings if they are out 2 weeks every 17 years. I mean, their parents would have been out in 1987. I don't know how much Rosslyn was built by then. The buildings may have caught them by surprise

That's what I figured--that the area was not as built up as 17 years prior.

The cicadas have all wrong. They're born, lie dormant in the ground for 17 years, emerge all at once and have as much sex as they can, then die.

Shouldn't the 17-year sleep come AFTER having as much sex as they can?

If you’re going to have so much sex, you’re literally going to die, I imagine that resting up beforehand is probably the proper strategy.

I live in NW DC and walk almost every day. I have seen a boatload this week. Sidewalks are strewn with them. A neighbor just painted their white picket fence and it was covered with them yesterday. Did I see recipes on a Channel 5  for Cicadas and Crickets?

I've seen some carcasses and maybe a few live ones this AM around CC, but I think a lot of the dirt here is either paved over or removed / installed since 17 years ago. Flower beds and the like.  Some preserved trees, and some land around the rail line and the parkway.  It's not like there's a storm of this stuff.

I recommend going out at night, at 10 pm or so, to the base of trees where they've been emerging to see them pop up, climb up trees, and shed their shells.  They're pretty pale when they first get out of their shells.  Amazing stuff.

I went outside this morning and a cicada promptly flew into the back of my head. Bounced off and continued on its way.

In Saturday I was in Loudon County near Purcellville and there were virtually no cicadas. This is consistent with what a coworker of mine who lives in rural Loudon County said. They don't seem to have cicadas there. I was also in Centreville on Saturday and didn't see any cicadas.

Today I was in North Arlington and McLean and there were cicadas everywhere and you could hear the constant buzzing up near the trees. A cicada landed on me, which was a great honor.

Cicadas need trees (they feed off roots). They need trees that are undisturbed for 17 years. Loudon is developed farmland, right? And those areas in North Arlington are treed, and completely developed?
