If they were going to send Robles to Triple A could have been done a month ago. He will still be the CF next year.
I don't think they thought Thomas would be a primary CF when they did the trade for him.  I forget, was he assigned to Rochester initially?  At any rate, what has happened is that both Yadi and Thomas emerged as every day guys in Davey's line up and Robles was not going to get the time to work his way back in the short term.  Better to have him hit in AAA, face a some vets with junk and some prospects, too.

Gotta call it. Welch was right. I admit I was wrong and I'm pretty surprised.

If there's a time to do it, it's now.  Him getting optioned also doesn't hurt the Nats' case in arbitration (look at what happened to MAT's earnings in arb after he spent part of a year in the minors: it won't be hard to tell which year it was looking at his career salaries).

It's a competition between him and Clay for usable lefty bullpen arm. Kind of the old movable object vs. imperceptible force.

Except Romero still has some starter potential

And Romero is recovering his strength in Rochester. He had that broken rib, or badly bruised rib, earlier this year. Romero looked respectable over the four innings I saw him on Red Wings TV.

Maybe time to bring up Aaron Barrett. They are both right-handers, but why play lefty-lefty matchups this September?

so you are saying he takes starts from Nolin?  Not that he couldn't be an improvement, but I'd be surprised if the plan for this year is to slot him into the rotation.

Alex Avilla off the DL, and Alberto Baldonado promoted from Rochester.  He's a 28 year-old lefty who pitched in Mexico in 2019 and 2020 and before that was in the Cubs and Mets' systems.

No reason at all for Avila to still be on this team

I agree. If he is to mentor our young catchers couldn't that be done by Henry Blanco?

Nats sign LHP Josh Rogers, recently cut by the O’s, assigned to Rochester.
Josh Rogers is called up in place of Kyle McGowin, who goes to the 60-day IL.

Adrian Sanchez DFA'd to clear a spot for Jordy Mercer's return.

Derek Dietrich and Blake Swihart released from Rochester.

I suppose Dietrich and Swihart might have somebody looking for bench help down the stretch.  I imagine Sanchez will not be claimed and will go down to Rochester.  He seems to be a Nats lifer.

Both hitting about .200. Swihart got some cheers at Worcester and some "We remember him" praise from the WooSox broadcasters. Never heard anything complimentary about Dietrich.

Did Dietrich get hurt in 2018? Or early in 2019? His numbers collapsed, and he has been hitting about .150 everywhere since.

The SAWX would not give up Swihart in a trade for Cole Hamels back in 2015. They knew he was a can’t miss prospect.  Oops. Sometimes the can’t miss guys fail.

No, he just tried and failed to become a home run hitter.   Well, that's not strictly true - he did hit a few homers - but he also stopped hitting anything else.

Dietrich's real problem is that he's universally reviled.  Guys who can play everywhere, get on base, and walk a lot still get chances except when they piss people off.  The chances he gets nowadays are telling.

especially when they get career-killing injuries playing out of position when the tram is just trying to get him in the lineup somehow. Folks ignore the damage done playing left field his 2nd callup

I thought I remember reading somewhere that Swihart was a d*** also.  At least when he was the next great thing.

I don't know anything about Swihart, but Dietrich apparently rubbed some people the wrong way before DC.  I've been looking just now, though, and seen some more positive things leak into the media, so maybe he's been maturing a bit, maybe that all was exaggerated, whatever.  It's just a pretty high bar for your personality in a clubhouse to make it through the rumor mill to nobodies like me.

I don't mean to be too hard on the dude - everyone has different swag - but the whispers were pretty loud for a while and it would seem to explain why worse hitters got better chances.  On the other hand, Carl Everett kept getting shots at the big time, so...

I think Carl Everett's thought patterns are increasing in society, not decreasing. Too bad the same thing can't be said about his hitting skills, because dude could hit.

Adrian Sanchez clears waivers and heads back to Rochester.  I saw yesterday that he's been with the club since 2007, only Zimmerman has a longer tenure.
