To make room for Harris and Soto, who were activated today, Nats sent Kyle McGowin to Rochester and DFA'd Hernan Perez.  Yadiel & Espino remain on roster.

TBH, I like DFA'ng Perez.  Mercer looks good as a back up, both Kieboom and Garcia can provide depth at MI and 3d base if there's a need, and Davey just has to get Yadi and RZ plate appearances.  Espino I guess survives until either Suero or Strasburg is back.

I'd imagine Perez will accept a minor league assignment as well.

A primer on how roster moves work once the minor leagues get going:

https://www.masnsports.com/nationals-pastime/2021/05/how-call-ups-and-rehab-assignments-will-work-in-2021.html

essentially, due to covid protocols, we can only call players up directly from Rochester as AAA and MLB have the same protocol. We can't bring someone up from any lower level without having them quarantined for some period of time.

The tough decision is who goes when Strasburg is activated as you have six legit starters today. You don't know what will transpire between now and ???

Seems pretty straight forward. Espino goes bye bye.

I think its a given Fedde is going back to  the pen. Its also pretty easy to piggy back him on Ross or Lester

Or package them in a trade for a 3B.

Is a six person rotation out of the question? Max can go every fifth day, and use Ross and Fedde to space everything else out

So Fedde right now is the second most valuable starter behind Scherzer. Ross is worth exactly 0 WAR, so who is trading for him exactly? Not saying that Fedde has much more value, but I don't suspect either is getting you a viable replacement at 3B.

No one is trading for either, unless they are the throw in piece

Does he still have options?

Having too many guys who can't play in the field burned them last night.  Having 3 guys who combined can cover 1 defensive position doesn't work if you actually want to do double switches and stuff with 55 pitchers on the roster.   Soto should have been hitting for Robles, but they couldn't do that because he misused the short bench.

Does he still have options?

Yes, one.

I agree, but Soto doesn't really look that game ready yet, and he wasn't really been getting the ball in the air very often pre-IL.   I wouldn't bet on him to have had better results last night, and didn't look any better in his AB than Robles did.

If he isn't ready, he should be on the IL.  But hey, they could always option him...

Let's just say the Nats reactivated Soto a series too early and could have used Perez for a few more days with the lefty starters lined up to face them.

The idea of optioning Soto after the NYY series has  some appeal if he can't play the field, TBH. Option him means not restarting the 10 day minimum you'd need for a DL stint. As you say, the stack at 1st/PH/DH limits what can be done.  As it is, if you use Stevenson as a PH early, you basically cannot PH for Robles against a tough righty.

Does optioning him cost him salary?

I don't think he has a 2 way contract so I think his MLB salary is guaranteed regardless of whether he's on the 25 man or even released.
