What???

Jefry Himself Rodriguez??? Can't the Nat find a semi-retired starting pitcher who was almost good five years ago? Where is AJ Cole?

AJ Cole is a reliever for the Blue Jays. Apparently a decent one too

Info on Andres Machado who was called up yesterday as the 27th man.

Here's more: https://www.federalbaseball.com/2021/6/13/22531321/washington-nationals-news-notes-davey-martinez-daniel-hudsons-andres-machado-yadiel-hernandez

Quote
Signed as an amateur free agent by the Kansas City Royals in 2010, Machado made his MLB debut with the club in 2017, with two appearances, but he hasn’t pitched in a major league game since. He signed a minor league deal with the Nationals this winter, and before he got called up, the right-hander had a 0.96 ERA in 9 1⁄3 innings with two walks and 12 Ks in seven outings at Triple-A Rochester.

“He had a sub-1.00 ERA, he went to go pitch for Team Venezuela, we just got him back, so it will be nice to see — if we get him a chance to pitch today, it will be nice to see what he can do,” Martinez said. “He’s a right-handed [pitcher], throws hard, has good movement on his fastball, has a good slider, so I’m interested to see how he does here if we can get him into a game.”

Nats sign RHP Kyle Hinton to a minor league deal.

24 years old, had been playing independent ball. Signed by the Royals in 2018. I'm guessing he heads to Wilmington.

seem to have a lot of Kyles in the organization.  I hear there's good one out west.

It looks like Machado had a few decent years in the minors, but collapsed the one season -- 2017 -- that the Royals brought him up.

I see that Kyle Hinton was also a Royals minor leaguer. Maybe Rizzo is good friends with KCR management?

Justin Miller put on the 40 and activated to replace Max. Rogelio Armenteros DFA'd. Armenteros had been terrible in Rochester, I'd imagine he's resigned to a minor league deal.

Congrats to Miller on making it back to the majors, he's been dominant at Rochester - 0.55 ERA, 0.796 WHIP in 16.1 IP with 5 saves, 29Ks.

Castro has been placed on the restricted list and Garcia called up.

Uh .... the restricted list is not the same as the paternity list, right?

The restricted list doesn't seem very common, and they need league approval to be on it.   Bereavement, paternity, family emergencies, COVID all have their own lists.

The restricted list is for players taking a leave of absence from the team, and that can be paid/unpaid at the team’s discretion. Dave Martinez will speak around 2 p.m., but one thing I can clarify now is that it’s not covid-related (since it’s easy to jump there these days).

Starlin Castro is “dealing with a family matter which requires his immediate attention,” according to a person with knowledge of the situation. That’s why he was placed on the restricted list this afternoon.

I'm guessing Cousin Raul wants him to get his butt back to Havana to run a coup.

No loss at all.  Castro is the weak link of the lineup

I hate them bumping Garcia up and down. If he is up here, put him in the lineup every day. Otherwise, leave him down in AAA, DFA one of our AAAA relievers, and get Noll on the 40 man to be the injury replacement bench warmer.

wait, you mean to say he's beating out Mercer while Castro is away?

Of course he'll play.  They hope he steals the job.

Except we need him getting reps at shortstop

I don't think playing at 2B or 3B is bad. The bat may someday play at one of those spots. I think every SS we had past decade started at 2B and moved to SS. I know at least true for Espinosa and Turner.

Depends on how you view it, though.  Both those guys played SS in college at high-level programs and then all the way up in the minors and were 23 or 24 before coming to the majors (and Turner was still pretty unpolished defensively at that point).

Garcia is barely 21 now and less than 2/3 of his minors experience is at SS.  He's not ready to be an MLB shortstop, though all signs suggest his glove will get there, which puts a ton less pressure on the bat.

I've seen a few scouting reports that project him as more of a 2B or 3B at the major league level. Turner isn't going anywhere for at least a year, and we have an immediate need for an INF, so play him at 2nd, Harrison at 3rd, and have Mercer come off the bench.
