As of today, Jonathan Lucroy has 10 years of service time as an MLB player and is fully vested in the pension program. Days in DFA limbo count so he’s in. Good job by the union, and by Lucroy, who’s hoping to be picked up by someone.

Jonathan Lucroy cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent. Davey Martinez said he's hoping to catch on with another club, may also try to make the USA Olympics team. If no other opportunities arise, "the door's always open" in D.C.

It can't be totally awful as they bothered to send him to the alternate site, but it's pretty clear that they view him as an org guy now unless something changes. Getting passed by Barrera was a pretty clear sign.

I wonder about Israel Pineda too. I think they were willing to expose him the Rule 5 draft because he's so far from the majors, but I think he's the next guy they have not given up on as a potential starter.

Reetz was moving up pretty nicely before last year, hit over .250 at Potomac in 2019 and probably would have been on track to start at Harrisburg last year, but he's 25 already now.

And he's already been a minor league free agent, which tells you how concerned they weren't about losing him. (Another question: if you're a minor league free agent and think you can actually make the majors, why would you re-up with the organization that hasn't given you that shot for six years?)

I guess the big question is whether he gets his 10 years in. I hope he does. After that, he can retire with dignity.

Avila's power is missing , but otherwise he's having an Avila year. Last 3 years he's average .184. His walk rate is up and his k rate down.

Flores had a few effective years., but I guess he spent his minor league time with the Mets. Ramos I think hit the majors a bit with the Twins, but he really blossomed here. And, of course, Derrek Norris came through this system and was an all star.

I wouldn't really count Flores or Ramos. Ironically, the second "best" (mostly by default) would probably be Sandy Leon.

Yes, Leon is who I think of.

The Nats traded Matt Capps to the Twins for Ramos because the Twins had Joe Mauer, a fine catcher, and Capps started 2010 looking pretty good. That was a "buy for nothing and sell high" trade: Nats signed Capps as a free agent in January, traded him in late July for TaTonka. As best I remember, Capps threw hard, but was wild. His stats suggest that he had down pretty well for the Pirates, but had a bad year in 2009 so they dropped him.
