The Royals are 14-7 and the Pittsburgh Pirates have, without Ke'Bryan Hayes, fought back from 1-6 to even their record at 11-11. I like small market clubs and this season am enjoying watching both a lot more than I am watching the Nationals.

All that money spent on offense, but their pitching staff leaves a lot to be desired. I do wonder if their ownership's philosophy is getting the attendance and viewership with dramatic offense rather than winning pennants.

The White Sox took a giant blow Sunday when young centerfielder Luis Robert injured his right hip flexor running to first while trying to beat out a grounder to third against Cleveland. As it turns out, the injury wasn’t minor, as he was diagnosed with a Grade III strain — a complete rupture of the muscle involved — and will not be able to resume baseball activities for 12–16 weeks.

Chicago hasn’t officially ruled out Robert for the season, but there’s enough uncertainty that senior VP/general manager Rick Hahn did not give a particularly optimistic assessment of when his return could be.

This has prompted a lot of articles about why the passed third strike is even a rule.   It is pretty quirky, and seems unfair to penalize the pitcher and reward the batter when he struck the guy out.  As a dad of a 13 yo pitcher, it's tough to watch an inning get extended when he should be out of the inning.  What is the point of the rule?

This has prompted a lot of articles about why the passed third strike is even a rule.   It is pretty quirky, and seems unfair to penalize the pitcher and reward the batter when he struck the guy out.  As a dad of a 13 yo pitcher, it's tough to watch an inning get extended when he should be out of the inning.  What is the point of the rule?

It’s also not a perfect game when a fielder makes an error during a no hitter. Same difference. Have no idea why other than tradition.

Basic difference to me is that when the fielder makes an error it is on a ball the batter put in play. The batter plays pretty much no part in a passed ball situation, so him being potentially rewarded for it makes little sense.

I always thought perfect game meant no one safely reached first. I guess you could say "faced the minimum without allowing a hit or walk, but that isn't as clean. The guy that reached was immediately thrown out trying to steal second base, so Means did face the minimum.

This is the first non-perfect game where no runners reached on a HBP, Walk, or error.

The dropped 3rd strike rule is dumb. Many people will come here to defend it because it's tradition. But traditions can still be dumb. And this one is.

If they want to keep perfect games as they are would be nice if they could categorize some no hitters as with no walks.  So then you know it was just errors.  Versus most in which they had walks.

I'm probably the least bound by tradition here but I've never heard anyone say it should be eliminated before today on this message board.  I even remember AJ Pierzynski starting a winning rally in playoff game on a dropped third strike.


It's a close cousin of an error.  You have to complete a play to get an out (other than the IF fly rule).
