Daniel Murphy has retired. One of the more fun players to watch during his short time here.

Heckuva ballplayer. That's why I got his jersey. That and it's my wife's maiden name.

One of the best hitters I can remember. With the Mets, he seemed never to make an out when playing against the Nats. And his 2016 Nats season: wow!

And the SNY article on Murphy's retiring. Mostly about the Mets, but there is this bit:

Quote
After that eventful 2015 season, Murphy became a free agent. The Mets did not pursue him, and he signed with the Washington Nationals. There -- and to a lesser extent in later stops with the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies -- he tormented his old team, batting .355 with 10 home runs against the Mets.

“I loved all of those guys, but for the three hours [of the game] you’re like, ‘I’m going to really focus up, just a tick more right here,’” he says. “I just think senses are heightened against your former team.”

curious what he'll focus on.  Manny Margot's development once they trade Kiermaier and Adames for Castillo?

would have brought him back for that.  That's a pretty low cost, high upside move.  If he has a recovery even to late 2019 performance levels, that's pretty cheap for a medium to hi  lev set up guy.

Doolittle doesn’t get enough enough credit for the championship. He was literally the only effective option in the bullpen for the entire first half of the year. Keeping the Nats hanging on by a thread until reinforcements can come. That overwork probably is one of the reasons his 2020 sucked. I’d have brought him back for 1.5 million as well.

They want to road test Avilan as the second lefty, and he was willing to sign a minor league contract.  Also, they may be hoping that Romero makes the squad, with his options.  I can't believe it was money.  Doo pretty much said he loved DC and his time here, so he would have signed for the same money.

IT was most definitely a roster structure call.  I think there's a bullpen squeeze already with Voth out of options.  It almost requires Fedde to go to Rochester.  There's Triple H + R (Hand Harris Hudson + Rainey) at the back end, and I think Suero and Finnegan are likely locks even though they have options.  That's 7 locks, and one slot up for grabs among the 2d lefties and McGowin, whose shown he can do the job as a multi-inning guy.

They also signed Sam Clay as a LHP.  Braymer, Clay, Hand and Romero are the only LH relievers on the 40-man so there definitely was a spot for Doolittle though if I recall Suero pitches well against Lefties.

With only one pitch in his arsenal and diminishing velocity and health issues his effectiveness was really hampered. Bs was right on the money regarding past performance but it remains to be seen if he’ll ever get back to that. Rizzo obviously didn’t think so.
