Mike Rizzo says the positive test will likely affect the Opening Day roster and five people (including a staff member) are currently in quarantine because they had close contact with the person who tested positive.

You should start a poll on who the 4 players are and a bonus question for the staff member...

More from Zuckerman:

The 1 positive test was a player, Rizzo says. The 4 other players and 1 staffer who were deemed close contacts are currently in quarantine. Appears they are not allowed to play tomorrow. Others were tested again this morning, awaiting results (including rapid tests).

Ugh....   Is that 6 players out for the first week then?  Not a good way to start.

I know people hate rich athletes getting vaccines ahead of others, but now that most of the prioritized people have got them, it seems like it would be a good idea for the community to give it to these guys who bring their germs from city to city.

Max says he's not one affected.

Sounds like at least 4 maybe 5 players out tomorrow.  That's going to hurt.  I don't think teams played like that last year did they?

better not be Soto or Castro.  Those dudes weren't even in the clubhouse with the rest of the team.

When was the test?  Is the rule still 2 negative tests 24 hours apart for the ones in contact?

Was not sure to post here or spring training, but uh oh.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/03/nationals-opening-day-roster-will-be-impacted-following-positive-covid-19-test.html

From this article:

Quote
Under this year’s updated health-and-safety guidelines, which were agreed upon by MLB and the Players Association back in early February, players who test positive “will be required to isolate for a minimum of 10 days, receive appropriate care and monitoring from the Club medical staff, and be cleared by the Joint Committee and the individual’s team physician, following a mandatory cardiac evaluation and a determination that the individual no longer presents a risk of infection to others.”

Under those same guidelines, individuals who have been identified as being in close contact with a confirmed positive “will be subject to a mandatory quarantine of seven days and must test negative on day 5 or later among other requirements to rejoin Club facilities.”

The test was on 3/29, so this knocks out the contacts at least through the Mets series.

That could be incredibly rough, depending on who they are.  Kieboom and Garcia may get another week to earn a spot.

The positive player was on the team charter, so this could blow up.

Just say there are no Nationals fans, that’s a fiction. Worked for Birdland

Luis Garcia called up as one of the replacements.  I guess that means at least one of the guys is an infielder.

Zuck tweets that STL has 85% vaccinated and will be able relax protocols, so the teams are getting vaccinated.

Scherzer is a go for tomorrow. He wasn’t on the charter flight.

Isn't Florida kind of the wild west for who gets vaccines and pay for play?   Why did St Louis get theirs, but we didn't?  All the grapefruit teams should have got it there.

No Florida has been doing it by age.  Started at 65.  Then 60.  Then 50.  Now 40.

Has this been updated:

One player tested positive, per Rizzo, but another four players and one staffer were deemed to close contacts in need of quarantine.

Looks like it has been:

Five members of the Nationals organization, including four players, are in COVID-19 protocol after a player tested positive for the virus on March 29. GM Mike Rizzo made the announcement Wednesday and said that four players in quarantine will be out for Thursday’s Opening Day matchup with the Mets.

A LH Reliever was called up in addition to Garcia.   So I guess a middle infielder and LHP are 2 of them.

And Yadiel Hernandez and a catcher.

https://twitter.com/dougherty_jesse

So, catcher, OF, Middle infielder, LHP so far.

Soto and Max are the only 2 who've said it isn't them.
