I could only think of Giolito and Treinen. Who else comes to mind. I'm just referring to players we felt would never make it in a Nats uni. Both were traded but we couldn't fix them while they were here.
Pedro Severino as a catcher.

was going to say Derrek Norris, Brad Peacock, and Jesus Luzardo, but 2 of those guys were never even called up to the majors.  Peacock wasn't really a bust here; rather, he was packaged early on.  Dane Dunning is another one who never was called up.  Felipe Vazquez (Romero) for Melancon.  Daniel Johnson looks like a major leaguer (traded for Gomes) but was sent down to game his service time.

I'll take the return on that one. Actually, I can't kick too much about Peacock and Norris (with Milone and Cole) for Gio.

Actually got me thinking about who were the worst FA signings by the Nats and you have to factor in the money and length of time they were here.? I came up with Weiters , Rodriguez and Papelbon. Should we start a new thread?

We didnt sign Papelbon. We trade Nick Pivetta to the Phillies for  him.

I still think Werth was a bad signing.

Soriano was awful.

Didn’t Papelbon come in a trade? He was only here a couple months.

I think I loved that signing. 2 years, $5mm a year?

Less effort than burning trash bags of dollar bills, so there is that

Now that Carter Kieboom is sent down along with Luis Garcia, and probably Starlin Castro and Jordy Mercer, with maybe some Harrison and Perez thrown in, it's time to restart our 3d base thread.
Over offseason, I said a few times I wanted the Nationals to sit tight at 3B. Let's give it some time. If Strasburg, Scherzer, Corbin are dealing, we can go hunting for a 3rd baseman over the summer. If we struggle out of the gates, try out time with minor leaguers and street free agents in the second half.

There wasn't an ideal option in free agency or offseason trade market to address 3B. An infield relying on Harrison, Castro, and Mercer for two of the spots is boring and leaves your lineup shallow, but it also isn't going to kill the season over the course 50 or 60 games.

that is a lot of salary to take on when you have not locked up Turner.

I have like zero expectation Turner is back. I want to believe.

If we are in the hunt in a few weeks, let’s make a run for it.

so, I hate to agree with Slate, but if that's the case, then stack things while Soto, Turner, Schwarber and Bell are cheap.

Turner and Seager will be free agents at the same time.

basically, this is a move for this year and next, then after that, we are stripped with a lot of cash.

Those numbers offset the previous 10 seasons when he hit .250 or so?

he's a career .187 ISO, and has hit 20-30 HRs every full season since 2012.  The average is freaky but the power isn't.

He is a slightly better hitter away from Seattle. Not a bad idea to swap for him honestly.

You mean the previous five seasons where he posted a wRC+ of 110?

Looks like Gyorko is going to sit out this year altogether to coach a draft league team.
