Are we done with the Sam Clay and Wander Suero experiments?

until you pluck your eyeballs out and say thank you, then you will be forced to watch Clay and Suero due to all the trolling you have done in this life

I'm fine with everything in this post but the thank you.  I mean, you gotta be seriously insane to say thank you to yourself, even if you've reached the point at which removing your own eyeballs is rational.

Your current Washington Nationals bullpen:
Brad Hand (LHP)
Wander Suero (RHP)
Austin Voth (RHP)
Sam Clay (LHP)
Kyle McGowin (RHP)
Jefry Rodriguez (RHP)
Andres Machado (RHP)
Ryne Harper (RHP)
Kyle Lobstein (LHP)

And Hand is likely unavailable tonight.

Rizzo just cannot build a bullpen.

If Suero has a rubber arm, he has value in eating up innings when we are getting blown out.  He may come in handy during this second half of the season.

Keeping one healthy is the bigger issue

The Padres have 3 of our former relievers.

Mark Melencon, Craig Stammen and Austin Adams. All 3 guys are having stellar years.

I've lost track of how many quality BP arms Rizzo has let leave.

Let's be fair about one of those three, at least.  Melancon was a rental from the start and the contract he got from SF was bonkers.

Stammen got non-tendered because he needed Tommy John and the year he would spend recovering from TJ would have been his walk year anyway.  To keep him, the Nationals functionally would have needed to give a multi-year deal to a middle reliever (albeit a good one) who'd just had Tommy John and hadn't pitched since.

Adams is the only one of those I would really put on Rizzo.  The other two departures were highly likely given the circumstances.

Melancon was a rental.  He was a free agent at end of that season.

How about credit for finding Hudson to help in 2019 and then signing him to a new contract?

I trust that when Hand is walking to the mound, in future, commentators will say 'here he comes - Mr Excitement...'

My calm, after the game, reflection on the poor performance yesterday is that I don't think Finnegan does well when he's brought back after ending an inning.  I haven't dug through the game logs, but I will guess a fair chunk of his bad outings are that scenario

Note the date. Yes, the Nats should have been done with Clay and Suero, but here they are.

There were some stretches where they were getting it done, but they were very short stretches

Maybe it's time to bring back Tanner Rainey. Of the current relievers, I trust

- Finnegan, most of the time

- Ryne Harper

- ??

I would outright Suero and Clay. A few young guys can throw hard, but don't have control or maybe haven't learned to pitch. Thompson, for instance, or Murphy and Klobo.

Espino would be a good long relief pitcher except that he's the best starter, sadly. Voth might have been weakened by Covid, and, if that's his problem, he ought to decent.
