Which is why W/L for pitchers is an incredibly stupid metric for evaluating pitchers.
Sure but also why it’s not impossible to win when the other team has its ace on the mound.

When was the last time we won a deGrom v. Scherzer matchup?  deGrom is so good right now, why not get creative and start Ross on OD?  Hope for the reverse jinx, and then let Max go the next day rather than burning him up against deGrom.
9/3/19 is the one I'll remember

I mean, historically, deGeom has 20 starts against the Nats and has 8 wins. So in over half the games, we at least had a chance.

Per Jesse Dougherty, Fedde is out of options after an arbiter ruled in his favor, so the Nats will have to send either Voth or Fedde through waivers unless they keep both in the bullpen (assuming the rest of the rotation is ready to go and Ross gets the #5 slot).

Wonder if the arbitrator resides in another NL East market

They would. Cheap young arms.

I would think Fedde is gone...Rizzo seemingly doesn't take kindly to guys that take him to arbitration.  This may end up being a blessing for Fedde's career...

Doubtful. Like I keep saying, arms are going to be needed. They cant let our rotation go 110+ pitches deep in April and expect them to last the full season. Theyre gonna have to be limited and you're going to need innings from relievers.

Fedde has had multiple chances as a starter, but hasnt out it together. He's a perfect candidate to turn into long relief. Theres no reason to let him walk, especially when the team has so little pitching depth

Any other year, probably.  This year?  He's cheap, can pitch multiple innings at a level above godawful, doesn't cost much, and requires no long-term commitment.  It might get him non-tendered after this year, but I can't see them cutting him or exposing him to waivers.  He'd get snapped up immediately for all of the above reasons.

There's also noise about a 9 man bullpen, at least at the start of the year.  If Harris has anything of significance wrong with him, then it's easy to see both Voth and Fedde being kept.

dougherty suggests that the Nats may go with a 4 man rotation until 5/8 with several off days on the schedule.

Monday: Ross vs. St. Louis

Tuesday: Corbin vs. St. Louis

Wednesday: Scherzer vs. St. Louis

Thursday: Off

Friday: Fedde at New York Mets

Saturday: Ross at New York Mets

Sunday: Corbin at New York Mets

April 26: Off

April 27: Scherzer vs. Toronto (in Dunedin, Fla.)

April 28: Fedde vs. Toronto (in Dunedin, Fla.)

April 29: Off

April 30: Ross vs. Miami

May 1: Corbin vs. Miami

May 2: Scherzer vs. Miami

May 3: Off

May 4: Fedde vs. Atlanta

May 5: Ross vs. Atlanta

May 6: Corbin vs. Atlanta

May 7: Scherzer at New York Yankees

May 8: Need another starter to keep everyone on regular rest
...
A more likely scenario is that Lester is back before May 8, meaning Scherzer, Corbin, Ross and Fedde could occasionally get an extra day between outings. ...
The lefty threw 49 pitches in three innings of a simulated game Thursday. If he juices that pitch count Tuesday, when a jump is expected, he could be close to rejoining the Nationals. Martinez hopes for him to log five innings and around 85 pitches.

Any Corbin start you have to pencil in as an automatic L for the foreseeable future. I imagine we want Lester back ASAP to take his spot.

give Lester another couple of rehab starts and he can take the 5/1 start against Miami.

It wouldn't be Nats baseball without a sideways start to the season.

Corbin was good tonight. Strange season. Just scroll up to see us dismiss Fedde and Voth. I agreed then. A month later and everything is different from game to game...

Corbin dropped the change up last night per FP, and that helped his slider a lot.  HE needs swing and misses, which he got last night. If that really was the difference, then the return to his old approach should lead to better results.

I believe I saw a couple changes. He threw lots more strikes this game. Can’t fall behind all the time if you only throw 91/92.

His fastball was way better as well.  Velocity was up and accuracy was way up.  He just didn't look regular season ready yet in those first 2 starts.   But he looked a lot closer to himself than Strasburg did his last outing!

suggests Lester may be available this weekend.
Quote
The struggles of Strasburg and Corbin have magnified the absence of Lester, who missed time during spring training to undergo a parathyroidectomy, and who was reportedly one of the Nationals who tested positive for COVID-19. He’s had to rebuild his pitch count at the alternate training site, starting with a three-inning, 49-pitch simulated game last Thursday, and is scheduled for a five-inning, 80-pitch sim game on Tuesday, which points towards a return this weekend if all goes well. While that’s the good news, the bad news is that the 37-year-old lefty has to reverse a decline that includes last year’s 5.16 ERA, 5.14 FIP, and 5.85 xERA, the last of which was the majors’ worst among qualifiers.
