Jerry Remy.

Sad to hear. Didn’t realize this, per Wiki: Remy was selected by the Washington Senators in the 19th round of the 1970 MLB draft, but he did not sign.

had not seen this yet. It was kind of seen as imminent when he threw outthe first ball for the NYY wild card game. He had 4 or 5 relapses of lung cancer over the past 5+ years.

Really it was Sean McDonough who helped him develop his broadcast style and ability to be both baseball sharp and funny too, then his work with Orsillo that helped DO develop into one of the best.  The pizza toss play by play is a classic, as is the time lenny Clark and Dennis Leary visited the booth and found out the Greek G-d of Walks is Jewish. His shtick with Wally and miny Wally and his chair was funny for a while and helped establish the mascot . But beyond the humor, he was sharp about the game and could convey it without being smug

Don’t know much about his announcing but remember him at 2B.  Was Denny Doyle after him?

doyle was 1975, I think. Remy came over in a trade with the Angels for 1978. After him, I think it was Marty Barrett for 1986 then Jody Reed. Sometime in there, before or after Reed, was Glen Hoffman, Trevor's oler brother. Gets fuzzy for me after that, John Valetin and Jose Offerman, which takes you just about up to Todd Walker, Mark Belhorn, Alex Cora, then Dustin Pedroia?

Remy was a gem in the booth, so good at explaining what was going on and always with such a great sense of humor about the goings-on in the stands and on the field. I am so glad the Sox gave him a day I think a year or two ago where they honored him and gave him a bunch of gifts, some seemed silly but he seemed so genuinely appreciative of that moment and so sincerely happy it was hard to not get emotional watching it. RIP Remdog, Red Sox Nation's forever mayor.

Just saw it. When Huff arrived, the team previously known as the Deadskins began to have a defense.

Did anyone in DC actually listen to the TV announcers during the heydays of Sonny, Sam, and Frank? Everyone I knew muted the TV so they could listen to those three on the radio.

RIP, Sam. One of the last ties to a golden era of Washington football.

wow.  I always liked Lugo in part because he was my discovery in my fantasy baseball draft maybe back in 2004 with the Rays, then he ended up on the Sox.  45 is pretty young for an athlete to have heart issues.

Edward Shames, last surviving member of Easy Company, the WWII unit featured in "Band of Brothers", a book written by Stephen Ambrose and later made into a mini-series.

Quote

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Edward Shames, a World War II veteran who was the last surviving officer of “Easy Company,” which inspired the HBO miniseries and book “Band of Brothers,” has died. He was 99.

An obituary posted by the Holomon-Brown Funeral Home & Crematory said Shames, of Norfolk, Virginia, died peacefully at his home on Friday.

Shames was involved in some of the most important battles of World War II. During the war, he was a member of the renowned Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

“He made his first combat jump into Normandy on D-Day as part of Operation Overlord. He volunteered for Operation Pegasus and then fought with Easy Company in Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne,” according to the obituary.
