IIRC, the two longest-standing individual world records set in 1968 Olympics were Beamon's long jump and Evans's 400 meter mark.  the 400 meter mark lasted 20 years per the article

I suppose competing in Mexico City and the lack of air resistance probably helped some of those remarks. IIRC, that team also did a few tricks, like training at altitude (Denver) and perhaps reinfusing blood (which was either undetectable or not against the rules at the time). Beamon for sure was helped on his jump.

I'd have thought that the air pollution would have offset any altitude advantage.  Maybe it doesn't matter in such a short event.

I don't know how much industry they had in Mexico City at the time.  Denver was awful at the time.

Given the geography of Mexico City, one large fart would cause acid rain for a few years.  And they had the world's largest fleet of VW bugs in those days.
