so your saying as long as their remaining three tears each hit 3 people, and those people each gave two tears back to the five you hit, the five your hit end up with 6 tears, so they are ahead.  And if the people hit by the tears of each of the original 5 did the same with their remaining 3 tears, they'd be ahead too.

Exactly! It's a tearamid scheme, and it's MUCH better to be at a higher tear.

That election was brutal.  When it became apparent that "morning" was in fact a solar flare with mass extinctions.

Hard not to talk about politics when talking about 1980 and 1984.

Mondale used to say he realized he wasn't going to pull off an upset in 1984 when at the 2d debate Reagan came out with that line about not using his opponent's youth and inexperience against him.  You see Mondale laughing at the line in the debate clips because he knew that was such a perfect comeback to the question about age and fitness.

Toshiro Kandagawa, at age 81.  He will be familiar to viewers of the original Iron Chef as the leader of the "rival" faction which sought to preserve traditional Japanese cuisine and thus functioned as the nemesis in many battles to the French and American-influenced Iron Chefs Japanese, as well as Iron Chef Chinese Chen Kenichi.

There were two Iron Chefs Japanese before Morimoto, Rokusaburo Michiba and Kōmei Nakamura. Both Michiba and Morimoto were considered mavericks, while Nakamura was more traditional. Kandagawa, and later Tadamichi Ōta, were portrayed as traditionalist rivals, kind of like heels in professional wrestling, to the less traditional Iron Chefs. The competed themselves, and led "factions" of other chef-competitors, often making remarks from the sidelines to goose up the drama.

thanks. I don't recall seeing those chefs on the FoodTV reruns, just the Chinese, French, Japanese, and Italian iron chefs.  IIRC, the Italian one came along later in the life of the series.

Yeah, for whatever reason, US broadcasts seem heavily focused on the later seasons. Morimoto actually came to the show after Iron Chef Italian Masahiko Kobe, and Morimoto competed in fewer battles than Michiba and Nakamura, and only two more than Kobe. Kobe died in an accident in 2019, by the way, but the other Iron Chefs are still alive AFAIK.

Astronaut Michael Collins, 90

Always had a lot of admiration for him.  Beyond his career in space, I remember him being prominently involved with the establishment and construction of the National Air and Space Museum.

Good movie.  Have to see if we have the old VCR tape around.

I was at the 1968 500 that he won with my dad...we had seats in the infield bleachers right on the start finish line...

How time flies...

Awesome.

It really was.  Wish I could find the commemorative embroidered patch that I bought, but it's apparently long gone...

I was also at a bar in Indy maybe 20-ish years ago when Al Unser, Jr. was bounced for being drunk...and referring to him as "drunk" is being kind.  That may have been the night that he went bonkers on his then girlfriend...

He doesn't seem to have learned much, as he was arrested for DUI, again, just 2 years ago...

I can see him being pulled over but saying "do you know who I am, I won the Indy 500."
