Bob Dole announces he has stage 4 lung cancer, he's 97.
Honestly did not remember he was still among us.  Hopefully he doesn't suffer.

I flew on a redeye back from LA that he was on around 15 years ago or so. He had filmed an appearance on the Tonight Show and then flew back to DC.  After we deplaned, I sat across from him on the people mover.  We were all exhausted, he was chipper and chatting with everyone that came up to him. He just came across as a really nice guy.

he may be the last of the public figures who fought in WWII, at least among the major government leaders.  I don't think any of the Supreme Court justices are still with us, I don't think Grassley or Leahy go back that far, and I can't think of another retired Senator still with us from that era.  If you were 18 in 1945, you'd be 93 today, so it is possible there are others.

If you don't restrict it to American public figures, then the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) counts; he fought in World War II. He's expected to turn 100 years old on June 10.

Didn’t he just get admitted to the hospital?

I do mean just American figures.  He's come to symbolize his generation, along with a few others who are now gone.  But let's drop discussion of Dole at this point and hope things proceed well.

Irv Cross.  Former Eagles DB and CBS analyst.

RIP.  Have fond memories of watching Irv and the rest of the NFL Today crew when CBS broadcast NFC games.  Not into the current pregame shows.

Had a theory that woman golfers couldn't hit the ball long because of physical traits that most men don't possess.

I thought it was because the slave owners bred slaves to have a better bone and muscle structure which was why black athletes were better today?

Not really famous per se, but familiar to many of us in the region: Vi Ripken, wife to Cal Sr. and mother to Cal Jr. and Billy, died last Friday.

Yeah, but that's just fulfilling the wishes of like 80% of people who had to listen to Musberger.  How someone who watched so many sporting events could be so clueless as to what was happening in front of him was amazing to me.  He's like a multi-sport version of Carpenter.

Legendary pro wrestling promoter Jim Crockett Jr, 76, of COVID.  He was a minor league baseball owner in Charlotte for a time as well.
