What a great coach.  And the Philly Big 5 was such a great intracity rivalry.   RIP
Nothing better than watching a college basketball game at the Palestra.

Sad to hear

Zuckerman tweeted that he had a horrible final year. A rough bout of Covid and then lymphoma

That's horrible. Reports are that he only found out a month ago.

Christopher Plummer, 91

I know he's most remembered for The Sound of Music, but he was also fantastic in Inside Man.  He also was the lead voice in Up.

You are right, i had the roles confused. Plummer played Charles Muntz, the nutty old explorer.

I don't know what it says about me, but I read an obituary like his where focus is on roles like The Sound of Music and various Shakespearean performances, yet what I associate him with are roles like Reverend Whirley in Dragnet and General Chang in Star Trek VI

Minor bit of trivia: Marc Okrand was the linguist who created the Klingon language for Star Trek. One of the quirks he gave the language was that it had no verb "to be". Then Star Trek VI comes along and they cast a Shakespearean actor to play a Klingon, one of whose defining traits was quoting Shakespeare in the original Klingon, including Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy. Plummer and Okrand worked together to craft a way to say it which sounded right and properly conveyed the meaning, essentially "to continue [existing] or not to continue" (taH pagh, TaHbe'!).

He really turned into a piece of crap later in life. I'm not one to wish death on people (ok, yes I am), and I'm not saying this world is a better place without him, I'm just saying we aren't missing much in his absence.

I saw him once during the time I was working TDY just outside Atlantic City.  They had a government rate at the Playboy so that’s where we stayed. I decided to work out one afternoon after work at the little fitness room with the hope that some of the bunnies would be working out. They were. And then the door opened and who was there but what looked like a hotel exec and Leon Spinks. He gave a big gap toothed smile to the ladies.  And then they were off. Probably this was 1982?  Not sure what fight he was in town for.

RIP.

Reading through the ESPN article on him brings back memories of how great boxing once was.

stopped following boxing when Leonard stole Hagler's title.  Marvelous was a hero back home.  Leonard pretty much admitted he just sat back and did a flurry at the end of each round to impress the judges.  That, and his insisting on 12 round fight for a championship rather than the standard 15 because he knew he couldn't go 15 with Marvelous Marvin. That middleweight division with Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, and Duran was awesome.

Leonard also stole the fight with Hearns getting a draw instead of the loss he deserved.

I still show my kids Hagler-Hearns everytime we watch a Rocky movie just to show them that a Rocky fight in real life is indeed possible. :)

I’d add Aaron Pryor and Wilfred Benitez to that list

IMHO Hagler, in his prime, was the greatest pound-for-pound boxer Of our time.  He was definitely robbed in the Leonard fight,   Leonard also robbed Hearns in their second fight.   I really miss those golden years of boxing....that middleweight division was amazing.  Hagler- Hearns was the most amazing three rounds of boxing I have ever seen.

I might put Roy Jones Jr. in that discussion,  but I'm not going to argue with Hagler.  And even though there was a lot of controversy in the Leonard-Hagler match, you still have to consider Leonard as one of the all-time greats given the competition he beat during his prime (Hearns, Hagler, Duran, etc.).

One guy who still doesn't get enough credit for how great he was is Larry Holmes during that era. He was my favorite fighter as a kid (which wasn't easy to say publicly on Long Island during the build-up to the Gerry Cooney fight).

Could you imagine how much money guys like Ali and Leonard would make in today's day and age?

Playing the judges is part of boxing.  Call it tactics.  Leonard did it better than his peers.  He admits this when he discusses some of his big fights.  I'm not going to say that he wasn't a great fighter for doing this.

I expected my comment on Hagler / Leonard to have drawn more flack here.
