I was surprised he was only 90.

Sadly the first thing I think of when I hear his name is an SNL skit from decades ago in which he was played by Eddie Murphy. He broke Doug Flutie’s heisman trophy during an appearance on a talk show.

That is unbelievable.  Especially just a few days after the All Madden bio show which I thoroughly enjoyed.

It’s not really unbelievable, the documentary and all of the players giving their praise to madden over the last couple of months led me to believe he didn’t have much longer here. I’m so glad he got to see all of those clips of players, coaches and fans singing his praises. RIP to a true legend.

For me, Summerall / Madden will never be surpassed, in the booth.

Maybe not unbelievable at 85 but still quite the timing.  He always has impeccable timing on those broadcasts.

I can remember spending so many Sundays as a kid listening to madden and so many other days listening to him on Nintendo

It's funny, but my two big memories of Madden are his Raiders "beating" what was probably the best non-Brady Pats team on the way to his super bowl (two atrocious calls on the last possessions for both teams - non-call on Villipiano holding Russ Francis when the pats were driving to hold a lead and a roughing the passer on Ray Hamilton that wouldn't even be called today), and his call on the drive to win Brady's first Super Bowl (kid should just take a knee and wait for overtime).

An article on Madden's call of the last 1:30 of Super Bowl XXXVI.  Goes from questioning what Brady / Weis / Belichick were doing to being absolutely thrilled about what they were doing.

It was the highlight of my week if Madden/Summerall were calling my team’s game.

I think the thing that is an testament to his greatness is the fact that how you remember him is totally dependent on how old you are.

If you’re my age, you remember him as great broadcaster. If you’re older you remember him as a great coach. If you’re younger you remember him for having his name on one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. Truly timeless.

I remember him as both a broadcaster and video game guy. His coaching was a bit before my time.

Unfrickinbelievable.

Also, I know she lived a wonderful, enviable life and all, but did it really have to be a few weeks before her 100th?  Sheeeeeit.

She's probably having a chuckle at all the attention.

Dan Reeves, former Cowboy and NFL coach.  At 77.  Would have assumed he was older than that.
