we are thin at LH relievers now, behind Clay and Hand is Seth Romero and Ben Braymar. Suero is good against lefties but he's hurt. Maybe we ask the Reds about the guy with the beard?

I have to think Suero is out at least a few weeks. I don't know what the plan with Voth is as time goes by. He couldn't step in as a spot starter now and doesn't have a role in the bp.

So, it's Suero with the oblique, Avilan with the UCL tear, Strasburg with shoulder inflammation, Harris and Lester still in rehab.

Just as starvation is known to lead to food hoarding, a shortage of starting pitchers can lead to pitcher hoarding.

Why, to the extent there may have ever been a "choice" between Strasburg, Harper and Rendon, I'd always opt for an everyday player. (I understand it may have been, with those specific players, that they may not have particularly wanted to stay.) Whatever the case, it's been clear for a long time how much Rizzo "favors" pitching.

I look at the O's 11th Round pick in 2014, John Means, and see a starting pitcher who's earning very little and may be significantly better than many high-paid starters, including at least one on our staff. Even more likely to find similar "finds" among relievers throughout the game.

The signing of Patrick Corbin looked like it was the typical Rizzo pre-replacement of Strasburg going into his walk year (opt out). He did it for JZ with Fister, and he did it for Harper with Eaton. The dicey decision was to re-sign Strasburg. I think a few people wanted to re-sign Rendon. We don't know whether Rendon really never would have come back here or not, and I don't think re-signing Strasburg looked like a bad plan B at the time, but hindsight makes it look like an emotional mistake rather than a well-considered risk.

Makes sense. It is early enough in the year that he can come back next summer, do a showcase, and somebody will take a chance on him down the stretch if it goes well. He'll be 33, so that getting up there, but if it works he can be what he is, a lefty specialist.

Interview with Daugherty. Expects to be out a few more weeks. Apparently, his hand for years has often gotten a little puffy and red after pitching, but this Spring it happened in the 3/6 exhibition against the Marlins while he was warming up. Impacted his cutter with 2 MPH velocity drop. What is causing this is still not diagnosed, but the plan is to experiment with some anti-inflammatories and otherwise just push through it. Says his arm is otherwise good, which is kind of like the captain of the Lusitania saying the weapons are secure in storage and he sees no German surface ships anywhere near him.
