Soto out for a few days after fouling a ball off his foot in batting practice. The ball still cleared the RF fence.

And probably also meant at least one reliever needed Tommy John, with the Nats' medical staff.

I guess we dodged a bullet not signing him to that $500 million deal.

Jon Lester had surgery to remove his thyroid gland, he's expected to be back in a week or so.

Anyone know the long-term impact this could have on his performance?

He will need to take medication unless they only removed part of it. Without knowing why they removed it hard to say what the implications are.

He will need to take medication ...

For the rest of his life. And the docs will have to find that happy medium until they find the correct dosage of meds.

Zuck reports that Davey said he'd been dealing with fatigue and it's unrelated to the lymphoma (but could be a lingering side effect from the treatment).

Fatigue relates to the docs finding the correct dosage levels.

Good to hear it's unrelated, that was my first thought when I heard this morning.

I don't think he's under treatment for the lymphoma.  For the thyroid, yes, I think he could have been given pills that had side effects.

I don't remember any when I had my thyroid removed in 2010

I'm wondering if he took thyroid pills before the decision to remove it.

Tim Cate shut down with arm soreness.

Zuck also notes that the radar gun at the park has been shut down after recording Scherzer in the 80's yesterday

Quote
* The radar gun at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches is day-to-day after being shut down Friday night during Max Scherzer’s much-anticipated Grapefruit League debut.
The contraption was registering mostly in the 80s for Scherzer, who it said topped out with a fastball at 92 mph - a debatable decrease in velocity for a guy whose first spring start was delayed by a sprained left ankle.
Well, you can’t always trust what you see on the radar gun readings, Martinez said. And there’s no cause for concern about decreased velo readings.
“The gun was quite off yesterday, so we had them shut it off,” Martinez said. “There was something wrong with it. Max was definitely throwing harder than 86, 87 (mph). Couple of balls, we had him at 93, 94.”
