Great Relay Throws

I have been watching a DVD I have of game five of the 1980 NL playoffs between the Astros and Phillies. I’m biased but this is one of the great relay throws I have ever seen by Manny Trillo. Nice get by Bake McBride and a great tag by Bob Boone. I would like to thank the Cubs for trading Manny Trlllo. They owed the Phillies after the Fergie Jenkins trade. Of course then the Phillies repaid the favor and traded the Cubs Ryne Sandberg.

Maybe others have some nominees for great relay throws?

One of my favorite things about being at the ballpark, instead of watching on TV is being able to watch cut-offs and relays develop.  That highlight is not textbook, but rather a great throw to the plate.  I love watching an accurate, glove-side throw to the cut off man, who is properly positioned with his feet moving so he can quickly pivot and make the relay throw.

All kidding aside, Danny Espinosa and the Bazouki Arm probably had a half dozen.



Fryer is already around 3rd when Espinosa gets the ball from Taylor in deep center and nails him by about 6 feet

At the other end of the spectrum,  there's Manny Ramirez's cutoff.

I saw an oriole CF make a throw from I believe it was the warning track to the plate to nail the runner without a relay that was unbelievable. I don't remember who it was but it was after Paul Blair and before Adam Jones (I know that's a lot of years). Probably the 1980's-1990's timeframe. And it wasn't Brady Anderson.

2013 maybe...sitting in the first row of the left field stands and watched Royce catch a high fly in medium-deep center field.  As soon as he unleashed the throw, I declared the runner coming in from third "out."

The Buffalo didn't even have to move, which was a good thing because if he had we all know he would have dropped it...and the runner was out by every bit of 15 feet.  It was a laser...
