The funny thing is that the Phillies and Mets are a lot like the Nats were on their run. Both teams have suspect pens and three very good starting pitchers (assuming deGrom is healthy). Both have lineups that can hit.
It’s not clear when Eflin will be back. Gibson who they picked up from the Rangers has been good all year. They needed to get one more starter. They really need Nola to just be decent.  And to be healthy.  They beat the Mets without Hoskins and McCutcheon. And Gregorius the past two games. And Herrera hurt today.

Not sure why you always insist the Mets have a good lineup. They are next to last in the NL in runs scored. The Nats have scored 70 more runs than the Mets.

The Phillies are about to play the Dodgers. Methinks they are going to fall back to earth again. We play the Mess, which honestly we might fair well against the spiraling Mets. Barves play the Reds, which could be difficult for the Barves.

The NL East is a dumpster fire of a division.
If the Phillies get past the next couple weeks they will be in good shape. September is filled with the Cubs, Rockies, Pirates, Orioles, Marlins and of course the Nats. Also a couple August series against Arizona.

The Mets much moreso than the Phillies. That Phillies rotation is way more suspect than Scherzer, Strasburg, and Year One Corbin were. It's basically Wheeler and smoke and mirrors. Nola has great peripheral stats and gives up way too many long balls. Elfin is hurt right now but looks kinda like what he is as a 4.00 ERA guy. Gibson is way over producing what his peripherals are.

The team also has holes. The 2019 Nats going on that run looked way more complete than the Phillies do right now.

With 3 teams within .5 of 1st place this morning, I'm going to pick the Mets as the eventual division winner only because they have the most games with the Nationals remaining on the schedule.  Big advantage for them.

It’s hard to understand how professional hitters can be this unproductive. The best teams have a more disciplined approach. The slugging and OPS numbers don’t lie.

The Philth lost to the D-Backs last night with Gibson pitching. I so dearly want their "re-build" to show nothing better than a .500 team, and I really want to see the Nats get back to the postseason before the Philth.

Good question would be  "who is your favorite opponent in the division?" I think hands down it's Freeman.  Watching deGrom and Realmuto is fun, too, but Freeman is a killer but not an a-hole.

Oh yeah...he's the kind of player/person you can root for 143 games of the year regardless of his uniform...

Starting pitching seems to be heading in a bad direction.   There are so few guys left who can effectively pitch deep into games and stay healthy.   It seems there is so much pressure to throw mid-high 90s to even keep your job and be effective, but so few pitchers throwing 100 pitches that fast every 5 days can't stay healthy.   It seems more and more moving into commoditized, disposable guys throwing 98 mph for a year or two and being done.   The marquee starters are becoming an endangered species, and that really kills a lot of the fun of watching baseball.

that was the same argument for why TJ surgeries have spiked among younger pitchers, the scouts only care about velocity.

Mister we can use a man like Greg Maddux again.

Least of three evils.  It's a successful season when the Phillies fail with Harper.  I think we can all agree on that.  I personally don't like the way the Mets do business (maybe others don't care either way).

Agree with this, but will also add Girardi's shenanigans with Scherzer as another reason to not want that Phillies to succeed.

I live north of Philadelphia. I want the Phillies to lose. All. The. Time.

There is no time that I actually want the team to win. Mostly it's fans, but also, the team just seems to be a group of D-Bags managed by a whiner. So, yea, take what you already dislike about Girardi and add in a bumch of extra d-bag ire and then you get the Philth.

The Mess is less about the players and more about the fans.

Off the field Girardi's a genuinely good guy.  On the field he's an A-HOLE.

Don't forget Robinson Cano and Yoenis Cespedes.  I'm curious to see what they do with Cano next year.

Yeah, the Mets fans who go to the game tend to be belligerent and spill lots of beer, often on others' heads.

Met fans are belligerant when their team is ahead. They cower when the Mets are losing. That can be fun.

You can put a fork in them.  They are done.  Compressed season last year but same thing happened.  Hope they fire Joe.  He is such a schmo.

When the Mets are a losing team -- not just losing a single game -- Met fans curl up, whimper, ignore the opposing team, and boo the daylights out of Met players.

That's all there is to Met fans. I enjoy going to Shea II when the Mets are bad. I remember a Ryan Zimmerman three run homer than flattened the crowd as if they had all been bonked by a giant hammer.

By contrast, this spring Yankee fans gave Max a standing ovation when he left in the 8th after striking out about 14 Yankees. (I think Brad Hand blew the game in the 9th...)
