Uhhh, I think we could. There are a bunch of guys out there each year who got that exact model.
He's making what?  $1MM.  That's more or less 1st year arb money.  I'm a huge believer that there's always a glut of bats for first, and he's short side of the platoon, too, but that's still low free agent money.  He hit a HR in less than every 20 PAs this year.  That's pretty solid. Stopped walking, but a .230 ISO is nice.  Even at 0.3 WAR, he provided surplus value this year.  Is he blocking anyone?  If yes, I'd say something different.  Maybe if they are serious about Riley Adams picking up a second position and perhaps  going with 3 catchers, then Zimmerman would be stealing PAs from someone. If they want to spend $5MM on Bell's backup, then fine, you could find better.  Internally, it's basically him or Jake Noll.  Maybe the right call is Noll, but I don't see Noll as a long term solution to anything, either.

Why would he accept $1 million for another full year.  It's not like the team is contending and near the luxury tax line and needs help.  I think he just did that as a favor for his last year.  Give him a share of the team.

I am anticipating a Ryan Zimmerman drop off. And if he becomes even league average against LHP, suddenly we have a platoon first baseman who doesn’t give you much at the plate and forces Bell to LF to get them on field at the same time.

I don’t think the small upside that he keeps taking LHP as worth the risk of having to carry an uncuttable bench player next year.

Bell is a poor hitter against LHP. Zim is not. Its literally a perfect match.

It isn’t extraordinary difficult to find a platoon hitter who can handle 1B and a corner spot.

It is when you suck and dont want to spend money. Exactly which LHP platoon first baseman can we get for 2 million or less?

We could call up Jake Noll and for cheaper and have a guy who could play all the corner spots.

But they hate Jake Noll and will never again let him on 40 Man, so guess that is is a poor example

Is it possible that Jake Noll just sucks? Everyone points to his numbers, but he's been living off a hot June and July. Beyond that, he was a below average hitter.

If they want to give him a shot in ST, sure. But he could easily be the bench player and Zim could too. Particularly if you bring back Escobar and have Garcia in the lineup. That leaves at least two spots for a backup catcher and  4th OFer.

Kind of hard to wrap my head around all that has unfolded since that first time I saw him vs Phils at RFK.  That's almost a cicada generation.

Second game we saw live was the Fathers Day walkoff against CMW and the Yankees at RFK.

Saw some of his first games, including his first hit -- and of course many great moments and HRs including that one, the Nats Park opener, etc.  Unreal that he's been here since pretty much the beginning.
