They went wild at sumo. At least for them.

Which is what, light clapping? :)

I'm a big fan of New Japan Pro Wrestling - great matches, nearly silent crowds.

Baseball is great.  Organized cheers and songs. The people in the super fan sections are loud.

Italy and Canada is quite a volleyball match. Canada won the first two sets but Italy has taken it to set five. 10-9 Italy in the final set now.

Italy wins.

There is a tropical storm headed directly for Tokyo early in the week. Oh my. When it rains it pours.

Article says the Japanese government has concluded it won’t be possible to hold the Olympics in 2022.

Watched the road race from about 11:30 to 1 AM, then took a 2 hour nap, woke up at 3, and watched the last hour and a half.  Fun racing.

USA almost pulled off an incredible surprise as Brandon McNulty, a support rider for the TdF winner (Tadej Pogocar of Slovenia), ended up in the key attack with Richard Carapaz, the eventual winner, about 15 miles from the finish.  McNulty was great all through the key parts of the race up to that point, joining Pogocar when he attacked at the most difficult part of the course. In the end, with about 4 miles left, he just could not keep up with Carapaz, who had rested a bit when McNulty pulled through on some of the flat parts of the finish. McNulty fell back to the 8 man pursuing pack and recovered enough to sprint for 6th place.  6th is the 3rd best finish for an American since 1984.  Carapaz became the second Ecuadorian to win a gold medal. McNulty is a good time trialist and will compete for a medal in the time trial on Wednesday

He completely lost it with a couple miles left!

I looked for MDS but couldn't make out which was him in the pack racing to the finish line. :mg:

Watched the highlights today - McNulty gets maximum points for ballsy cycling moxie.  Much as I wanted Woods to win, it seemed fitting that van Aert and Pogacar rounded out the podium.  That really was TdF 2.0.

all itneeded was Carapaz not taking turns with McNulty.

You wonder if UAE will ever give him a leadership role on a grand tour that Pogocar is not at. They work well together
He may become like Porte or Poels were to Froome.

I also wonder if him and Kuss are picking up Slovenian given how much time they put in at the front of races

USA and Australia locked in a scoreless tie in softball.  Unusual format as it's a six team pool.  After the round robin the top two teams okay for Gold and the next two for Bronze.  No playoffs before that.

USA wins 2-1 in extra innings. And yes they put a runner at second base to start extra innings. It’s also weird that they are playing on a baseball field. So they run the basepaths on grass and then there is dirt in the outfield.

The ladies are making a statement in the pool! Preliminary qualifying heats featured back to back to back olympic records in the 100m backstroke. The semifinals (tonight) and finals of that event are going to be incredible.

Just watched the women’s cycling road race. Huge upset. Apparently the woman who won broke away unnoticed by the favorites. There are no radio communications allowed in the Olympics. So when the favorite crossed the finish line she celebrated. She had to be told somebody else had finished a minute and a half earlier.

There's a big argument in cycling about radios. Ali probably can explain,  but they help for safety but make it harder for breakaways . For safety, literally in the Tour, riders spotted a tourist who fell down over the edge of a mountain after one stage. More common are guys who get in trouble away from the main group. The women's race is the best argument against radios
