I wonder if Auckland has the facilities to put this on.

Toughest thing for a spontaneous substitution is the specialized facilities. The velodrome is a tough one, and there's probably others. Baseball fields used to be another in non-baseball countries. More you think about it, Beijing or maybe Seoul could pull it off.

US is probably out due to its infection rates.

Auckland hosted the Commonwealth Games so they should have at least useable velodromes and other such infrastructure. And they have Steinlager, so that should seal the deal

How cold does it get Late July / early August? Maybe it could shift to late August / early september like I think Rio did. Make the athletes quarantine and / or get inoculated, and maybe it could work.

I don't see the island nation that has escaped the worst of covid by virtue of being an island nation suddenly inviting in fans and athletes from around the world

who said anything about fans? quarantines and shots for the athletes. But yes, I don't really think this is happening. Not even suggested. Jacinda doesn't need it, while FLA government is pumping it out there for PR, mainly.

This is kind of funny for a couple of reasons. They still have fewer per capita Covid cases than we do. And they are not letting US tourists in anyway.

I have complete confidence that, should she want to, Simone Biles would be able to vault from Kamchatka to Hokkaido, using a wayward whale as a springboard, doing a triple pike with a reverse.

The whale is important, but she can probably manage without. Ryan Lochte can get himself "nabbed by Somalian pirates" who will mysteriously decide to drop him in Tokyo.

Despite their National Emergency, Japan still has lower rates of infection than many places here. And we are having sporting events with full audiences with a wink and a nod that you will wear a mask if not vaccinated. As you can see by watching these events the vaccination level must be almost 100 percent here.

I agree MG. These athletes trained hard. Many of them with just one shot at the Olympics. We had sporting events and championships awarded in North America last year with no audiences. No reason that Japan cannot hold the Olympics under those same rules. Not as much fun but still the Olympics for these athletes.

Nobody competes in or watches the Olympics for the fans in the stadium. Organized sports provide a sense of normalcy during the pandemic and nothing would provide more normalcy to more people than the Olympics.

Also, in cycling, one of the top Colombians, Dani Martinez, is out due to lingering COVID. Colombia is still probably the strongest team from the Americas, but the aren't bringing Martinez or their top guy, Egan Bernal. Team size varies based on rankings in the world, so Colombia qualified for 5 but is now down to 4 cyclists, Canada gets 3, and the USA gets 2 for the men's road race. For the women's race, the USA is one of the top countries, so they get 4 cyclists (max for the women's teams).

Ok there were soccer matches earlier today before the opening ceremony but missed those. Was watching some heats from singles rowing. We had a woman in our office who rowed in the 92 Olympics. She sometimes would wear a sleeveless dress and it scared me. Talk about muscles. And she said she was the smallest on the team.
